Nude nails, geometric nails, nails with bold pops of color and much more were on full display at the Spring /Summer 2016 NYFW shows.

Backstage at Creatures of the Wind and Tadashi Shoji, butter LONDON’s Global Colour Ambassador, Katie Jane Hughes, created fashion-forward nail looks that perfectly complimented the collections.

Simple yet bold, the nail look was inspired by the hippie meets punk vibe of the collection. Four high-shine nail colors were assigned to models based upon their look.

Get The Look:

  1. For white nails: apply two coats of Nail Lacquer in Cotton Buds.
  2. For blue nails: apply two coats of Nail Lacquer in Skive (NEW for Spring ’16).
  3. For black nails: apply two coats of Nail Lacquer in Union Jack Black.
  4. For yellow nails, apply one coat of Nail Lacquer in Cotton Budsfollowed by two coats of Nail Lacquer in Cheeky Chops , below.
  5. Finish with one coat of Patent-Gel Topcoat for a thick, high-shine finish.

The collection at Tadashi was inspired by Tadashi’s own memories of Japan. The nail look incorporated pale colors and a soft ombré to reflect Tadashi’s “blooming nostalgia,” and “whispers of a Japanese Garden” inspiration.

Get The Look:

  1. Apply one coat of Nail Foundation to clean, dry nails.
  2. Using the Ombré Brushdip the tip of the brush into Nail Lacquer in Cotton Budssweep the brush lightly from the top of the nail, beginning from a different angle on each nail.
  3. Repeat with Nail Lacquer in Muggins.
  4. Repeat with Nail Lacquer in Molly Coddled, below.
  5. Finish with one coat of Hardwear P.D. Quick Topcoat for a soft yet shiny finish.

The lead nail artist for Smith & Cult created an updated glittery version of the French manicure for Nicholas K’s Spring/ Summer 2016 show.

Get The Look:
1. Apply Smith & Cult’s Ghost Edit as a base coat.
2. Next, gently place specs of 24kt gold leafing on the tip of the nail.

3. Use a disposable mascara wand to lightly brush the leafing to achieve the desired look.
4. For an at-home version of the look, use Smith & Cult’s Bridge and Tunnel and gently apply one coat to the tip of the nail. When the first coat is dry, apply an additional coat along the tip of the nail for the desired effect.

Backstage at Nicole Miller’s Spring/Summer 2016 show, butter LONDON’s lead manicurist, Katie Jane Hughes, created a fashion-forward nail design that perfectly complemented the fun, edgy collection.

What Katie says: “I created this bold nail look to play off of the street art inspired clothing in the collection. Black nails and edgy details are going to be a trend for spring. Spring beauty this season isn’t about playing by the rules.”

The graphic, splatter-effect nail art featured a pop of color that mimics the bold street art and graffiti patterns found throughout the collection.

Get The Look:

  1. Apply two coats Nail Lacquer in Cotton Buds.
  2. Dip a bobby pin into Nail Lacquer in Union Jack Black. Position the bobby pin over the nail and blow through the middle to create a splatter effect on each nail.
  3. With a new bobby pin, repeat the process with Nail Lacquer in Easy Peasy (NEW – launching in April ‘16) on various nails on both hands.

To pair with the feminine, yet edgy and dark undertone of Wes Gordon‘s Spring/Summer 2016 collection, Rita Remark for essie created a gothic ombre nail look that perfectly captured the enviable style of ’90s “good girl gone bad.” The nail design juxtaposes light and dark with wet and dry.

Get The Look:

1. Apply First Base Base Coat to clean, filed nails

2. Next, apply two coats of In the Lobby, avoiding the moon at the cuticle area

3. Then apply one coat of Matte About You over In The lobby

4. To achieve the gothic ombre design, remove most of the polish from the Devils Advocate brush and create upward streaks from the cuticle to the center of the nail

5. Finish by removing most of the polish from the Gelssetter top coat brush and apply directly on top of the Devils Advocate to add high shine

Expert tip: Gel setter gives a 3D wet effect when used.

Jin Soon Choi used a luxurious, deep oxblood to complement the romantic details in Derek Lam‘s collection. The overall look was American sportswear romanticized through details.

Taking inspiration from Brooks Brothers by Zac Posen‘s Spring/Summer 2016 collection, Glamsquad for essie created a standout nail design that played on the plaids and interesting stitching details found throughout the garments, all while keeping true to brand’s classic resort feel. Atlantic blue and sandy beige shades were also chosen for manicure colors to complement the  designer’s spring palette.

Get the look (red and blue plaid):

  1. Apply first base base coat to clean, filed nails
  2. Next, apply two coats of fifth avenue
  3. Using a striping brush, create two thin, vertical lines with pret-a-surfer on the left side of the nail
  4. To finish the plaid design, take the striping brush and create two thin, horizontal lines with pret-a-surfer near the edge of the nail
  5. Then, apply good to go top coat

  2. Next, apply a thin coat of resort fling
  3. Then, apply one coat of sugar daddy
  4. Using a striping brush, carefully apply one thin, vertical stripe of after school boy blazer on each nail; placement should be sporadic and vary from nail to nail
  5. Next, using a striping brush, choose one finger on each hand and carefully apply a second thin, vertical stripe of after school boy blazer next to the original stripe
  6. Finish with good to go top coat

To complement the earthy, ethereal vibe, Rita Remark for essie, the brand’s new Global Lead Educator, chose two nail looks: a standout bright blue to add an element of fun, and a soft, sheer pink that perfectly paired with the gowns.
