April 2010

I’m a total perfume junkie and I still remember spritzing myself with my mom’s bottle of Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds before I ran out the door to middle school. And now I think I’ve found a new favorite. We all know Nicole Miller for her amazing fashions that grace the runways, well, now she has introduced a perfume that captures the essence of her beautiful collections. [caption id="attachment_4693" align="alignnone" width="404" caption="Nicole Miller -Spellman "]Nicole Miller -Spellman [/caption] The new scent that is aptly named Nicole Miller is a bold mix of heavenly aromas. It is invoked with notes of yellow gardenia, cassis sorbet, black patchouli, cedar, ylang ylang and amber- just to name a few. The fragrance is light and airy enough for a Spring stroll through Central Park and sweet enough for a date night out on the town.
On Saturday, I had a great fortune to meet some of the tall luscious models of Victoria's Secret (Alessandra, Candice and Miranda) and interview Miranda on the new Limited Edition perfume launch of Heavenly Flowers. The scent is inspired by the well-known Dream Angels Heavenly perfume, the one that reminds us of clouds, angels and everything beautiful and ethereal. The new Heavenly Flowers perfume ($49) has notes of fresh peony heart, but is juicier than Dream Angels with luscious fruit and a blend of sun-splashed blossoms. Here's what she has to say about the perfume. She was also the face of a previous launch of the Heavenly Bloom Fragrance.
If certain notes are defined by particular eras, tuberose belongs to the Forties. Think of Rita Hayworth in Gilda, who inspired the category-defining Fracas by Robert Piguet, against which all other tuberose scents continue to be measured. Unfortunately, in contemporary perfumery the powerful headiness of tuberose too often devolves into what you smell on fat ladies in mink. That’s why Bond No. 9 Saks Fifth Avenue, which pairs tuberose with its classic cohorts—gardenia, jasmine and coconut—gives me the shudders. Maybe it’s supposed to smell retro-classy, but it ends up being a headache-inducing museum piece. Leaving behind the slop of watery coconut, some perfumers are now using new and unexpected notes to reframe the carnal opulence of the tuberose in a way that resonates with 21st-century consumers. Serge Lutens Tubereuse Criminelle is perhaps the most extreme example of this, with top notes that have been described as a cross between moth balls and sewer gas. Love it or hate it, critics agree that it casts the tuberose in an alluringly original and dangerous light. [caption id="attachment_4484" align="alignnone" width="223" caption="Histoire du Parfum Tuberose Trilogy "]Histoire du Parfum Tuberose Trilogy [/caption] Along the same lines, French fragrance house Histoires de Parfums has given tuberose three contemporary personalities with the launch of its Tuberose Trilogy, which combines the perfume of the flower with different middle and base notes to create three distinct scents.
At last, a stem cell treatment that’s not wracked with controversy. The scientists at Vichy recently located the skin’s adult stem cells in the basal layer of epidermis. Translated, that means these super-powered regenerating cells still on the bottom of the top layer of our skin. Once the white coats found them, they started working on a serum to protect and replenish them. The new Vichy Aqualia Antiox line ($28-$45 at www.vichyusa.com, and drugstores) uses citrus polyphenol, a naturally occurring compound, along with vitamins C and E, to boost performance of stem cells. In non-scientific terms, it gives you back your glow. [caption id="attachment_3566" align="alignnone" width="250" caption="Vichy Aqualia Moisturizer "]Vichy Aqualia Moisturizer [/caption] Like Philosophy’s Miracle Worker systems, the Antioxidant Fresh Serum comes in two separate containers that you, the consumer, combine and then refrigerate for maximum freshness. Because the serum contains 10% vitamin C and no preservatives, this refrigeration is crucial to maintaining the product’s effectiveness. I also imagine it would feel awfully good to smooth in on to sunburned skin, not that any of your plan on getting sunburned ever again. [caption id="attachment_3567" align="alignnone" width="250" caption="Vichy Aqualia Serum"]Vichy Aqualia Serum[/caption] The complementing moisturizer, Pro-Youth Antioxidant 24Hour Hydrating Fluid SPF 12, contains the same ingredients as the serum, but also uses Vichy’s signature thermal water full of rare minerals to offer the skin 24 hours of hydration with each application. A word of caution: If you plan on extended time in the sun, put on a sun block with a little more muscle. Finally, the Anti-Fatigue Ice-Effect Eye Stick delivers these benefits to your eyes in a compact container that immediately chills a puffy eye area.
There are sunscreens, and there are sunscreens. Like comparing apples to oranges, Hondas to Ferraris or even condos to mansions, everyone wants the bigger, the better. In the case of SPF, the higher number does not necessarily mean better. In fact, there's a point at which the SPF number becomes as meaningless as a pile of empty papers on the floor. [caption id="attachment_3559" align="alignnone" width="138" caption="Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 "]Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 [/caption] We're excited about the Skinceuticals new Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50, which is a brand new first-to-market mattifying fluid that provides a sheer protection for all skin types (even the super sensitive). It offers the protection of a broad spectrum of PHYSICAL filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) instead of the typical CHEMICAL filters that sunscreens employ. There have also been some studies that link UVA and UVB rays to osteoporosis, so as the summer season rolls around, it pays to be religious to the point of fanatical about sunscreen.
