23 Mar (How To): Create Award-Winning Hairstyles at Home (Reese Witherspoon, Oscars 2011; Emma Stone, Golden Globes 2011)
As much as we all dream about it, realistically we’re probably never going to get the chance to go to one of Hollywood’s major award shows. But just because we might never take home an Oscar, a Grammy, or a Golden Globe, doesn’t mean we can’t have a little award show fun as well!
Like any other self-respecting beauty/fashion fanatics, our primary motivation in watching these shows is, of course, the Red Carpet! And you could say that watching these beautiful starlets strut their stuff and lusting after their immaculate beauty has become a bit of a hobby for all of us at BeautyStat.
Now that award season is over and we’re experiencing a bit of Red Carpet withdrawal, BeautyStat wanted to give our Red Carpet crazy readers a little present. We partnered with Boston’s prestigious Newbury St. Salon, Salon Mario Russo , to recreate some of this award season’s hottest looks.
Expert stylist, Sal Malafronte, worked his magic to recreate the Red Carpet looks we all lusted after, and we’ve got the step-by-step instructions for all of them, lovelies. That’s right, you, too, can now have award-ready hair now. Get going ladies, the Red Carpet waits for no one, even the most fantastic.
Golden Globes 2011
The Star: Emma Stone
The Look: Sexy up-do
The Products: Hair pins, Shu Uemura’s Sheer Lacquer Finishing Spray
We’re already huge fans of Miss Stone (Easy A, anyone?) but this look solidified her star status for us. She looked so chic with her sleek up-do, and we were quickly became super jealous of this look. So, we asked Sal to show us the proper way to achieve this sexy look!
Expert tip: Start with day-old hair for best results
- Create a side part and tease “mohawk” section of hair by sections, starting about 1-2 inches back from hairline and moving backward to the crown.
- Tease vertical sections of hair on the side to right behind the ear, making sure to leave front section smooth along hairline.
- Make a tight, sleek pony with remainder of hair and secure at the crown right at the base of teased hair.
- Secure hair into a ballet bun with hair pins (hair pins are easier to secure than bobby pins, but you can use bobby pins as well), then spray Shu Uemura’s Sheer Lacquer Finishing Spray.
- Wrap the bottom right side of teased hair around bun and secure. Spray again.
- Wrap the bottom left side of teased hair around bun in opposite direction and secure. Set with spray.
- Take top right side of teased hair, leaving smooth section loose to frame face, and wrap around bun. Secure and spray.
- Take top left side of teased hair, leaving smooth section loose to frame face, and wrap around bun. Secure and spray.
- Create side part as desired and pin back remainder of hair (if you can wrap around bun, do so)
- Spray, spray, spray.

The Star: Reese Witherspoon
The Look: Retro voluminous Barbie hair
The Products: Shu Uemeura’s Ample Angora Volumizing Light Foam, Sheer Lacquer Finishing Spray, and Essence Absolue; a large round brush; and a Mason Pearson brush to smooth hair.
When Reese stepped onto the Red Carpet at the Oscars, our first reaction was WOW. With her voluminous hair and sleek dress, she looked like a true Barbie doll, and we were dying to find out how in the world her hair got to looking so fab. So we challenged Sal to recreate the look, and he certainly delivered.
- Start by sectioning hair into three separate sections (Mohawk, two sides, and the back).
- Take the two side sections and pull up into a high pony tail at the crown
- Curl hair with a 1 ½ inch curling iron and brush out
- Pin pony at the top while you deal with the rest of your hair
- Tease the Mohawk section into the ponytail to create volume
- Set the look with spray as you go through each step
