Skincare Review, Ingredients, Photos, Swatches: Borghese Fango Essenziali Face + Body Mud Masks

The newly introduced Fango Essenziali mud masks, $32.50, from esteemed Italian luxury line Borghese, offered immediate eye appeal even before the jars were opened—those brightly colored boxes and tubs are such a visual treat! I was excited about their contents too, because the Borghese brand is known for its nutrient-dense clay, which has been put to good use in these luxurious yet affordable products.

The masks come in spreadable form, and there are four different formulas. They are suitable for both face and body and can be used alone or in combination to create a personalized spa treatment. All perform their function within 5 minutes (though they can remain on the skin for as long as 20 minutes) and are meant to be washed off while still wet. And all are paraben-free, as well as clinically and allergy tested.

Purify, contains grapefruit and pink peppercorn (known as an anti-inflammatory, along with aloe, special clay, salicylic acid (great for chemical exfoliation) and allantoin (a protein that’s perfect for soothing and healing). It promises to clean, minimize pores and help prevent premature aging. It’s packaged in a bright pink tub, and the pale taupe mud has a faint scent of pink peppercorns.

Calm contains lavender extract, lemon seed extract and safflower seed oil. It’s meant to soothe skin, tighten fine lines and fight against pollutants. The off-white formula with its faint lemon seed fragrance comes in a bright blue tub.

Energize features coffee seed, caffeine, charcoal powder, Vitamin E and other ingredients to combat dull skin. It stimulates collagen and elastin production for a toned look. This deep, mossy green mud has a faint floral scent and comes packaged in a bright orange tub.

Moisturize, has olive oil and blood orange formula. Blood orange is a gentle citrus that gives sensitive skin the benefits that oily skins get from lemon. It’s deeply hydrating, which will surprise some, considering it’s still a clay mask. The olive colored mud is packaged in a bright green tub with medium olive colored mud.

Since the masks are best used every two-three days, I sampled the four formulas over a period of ten days, using them in the evening, on cleansed skin. I was able to create an individualized beauty regime, targeting some areas that needed toning, others that needed moisturizing etc. The formulas spread easily and, equally important, washed off easily; some masks have you scrubbing at your face like it’s the kitchen sink! Post mask, my skin felt cleansed, but not stripped, as well as toned and pampered. The fragrances of the masks are subtle but delightful and the fact that the masks work in 5 minutes means you’re more likely to use them. All in all, a great new twist on a much-loved classic.
