For the Met Gala, honoring the work of Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, Hailee Steinfeld’s hair made an ultramodernist statement.
Gregory Russell was inspired by Hailee’s structured Vera Wang gown and this year’s exhibition to create a slick, high shine, sculptural top knot.
Get The Look:
Start with wet hair and apply John Frieda Frizz Ease Clearly Defined Styling Gel straight to the root, using a tail comb to section the hair and applying the gel every 2 inches to keep the roots as smooth as possible. Then, work the gel through the lengths and ends of the hair.
Next, use a wire brush to pull the hair up to the top of the crown. Using a comb, smooth out any bumps and flyaways before tying the hair with a bungee hair tie.
Brush out the tail of the pony and begin to twist it into the desired knot shape. Once the shape is achieved, pin it down as discretely as possible using bobby pins.
Then, using a blow-dryer with diffuser, dry the hair in a circular motion and create the high gloss finish by applying two pumps of John Frieda Frizz Ease Extra Strength Serum – working from the front of the hair to the knot.
Finally, spray John Frieda Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray to lock in the style.
Kim Kardashian West‘s makeup was done by Mario Dedivanovic for Kiehl’s and Chanel
How did you and Kim turn her vision into reality this evening?
She’s been feeling a very clean and relaxed vibe lately, and I have, as well. She wore a really clean dress, simple and white and beautiful, and she wanted to feel and look like herself.
I added a little white matte color to her eyes to pop the dress a bit. Nothing too edgy. Rei Kawakubo does a lot of clean skin on the runway, and I was inspired by that. We created a really nice base with the complexion, using more tan colors, and kept the eyes really simple and lash-y.
What steps did you take to prep for the look?
I applied Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Mask beforehand and used Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate on her cheekbones for extra glow. I prepped her skin with Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado, Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream SPF 30 and Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado and Kiehl’s Butterstick Lip Treatment SPF 25 in Untinted, which is a favorite of mine.
Eyes, lips or cheeks: which of her features did you want to emphasize the most?
The eyes and lashes. When you look at her, your eye goes straight to the white on the inner corners of her eyes, even though it’s quite simple.
How did you create Kim’s eye look?
I used CHANEL Ombre Première Longwear Cream Eyeshadow in Undertone all over her lids as a base of color. Then, to create a thicker texture, I layered CHANEL Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow in Visone in the crease and a little along lower lashline. I applied CHANEL Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow in Sable, but not too close to the inner corner. I kept it more on the outside, with very little on the lower lashline.
I added some CHANEL Le Crayon Khôl Intense Eye Pencil in Noir from the center of her eyelids out, slightly winging at the ends. Then, tons of CHANEL Le Volume Mascara on the top and bottom lashes.
How about her complexion?
After moisturizer, I applied CHANEL Le Teint Ultra Tenue Ultrawear Flawless Foundation in 50 Beige with my fingertips, then blended with a brush. It was pretty simple. We did a little bronzer on her cheeks and along the hairline and forehead.
What color did you choose for her lips?
A classic, beautiful pinkish nude, which she loves and I love. We used CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in Libre.
What’s your favorite Chanel product from Kim’s look tonight, and why?
I love the texture of the lip color. And I love the foundation: It went on really beautifully.
How do you balance an event theme with Kim’s signature look?
There are definitely aspects of the makeup that play to the theme, like the clean skin and white matte eyeshadow. These have been used in certain Comme des Garçons runways. But we still kept true to Kim’s signature lashes, contouring and nude lip. The most important thing for her is she just feels super-comfortable.
Any tips you would share from tonight’s look? Like how to get that perfect matte complexion?
At home, most people tend to apply foundation with their fingers. Try buffing it in with a round foundation brush in circles. It tends to have a great finish.
At the Met Gala, Stella McCartney and guest Kate Hudson shined on the red carpet in gorgeous gowns and sleek hairstyles. Their go-to stylist Peter Gray used ABBA Pure Performance Vegan Hair Care and Cricket Co. Professional Tools to create Stella’s flowing waves and Kate’s sleek top knot. Get The Look:
To prep the hair, I used the Thermal Protect Spray then applied ABBA Volumizing Root Lift Spray on damp hair from mid to end of hair and combed it through with the Cricket Silkomb Rattail Pro-50 to give it more texture and volume.
I used a tiny bit of Blow Dry Lotion mid to end of hair to create a bit of slip I then used the Cricket Copper Clean Paddle brush to smooth hair.
I used the Centrix Q-Zone Dryer to dry hair on low heat and low blow to create texture and a lived-in look, texturizing with the thumb and forefinger and applied ABBA Dry Shampoo to set the hair
Next I took the Ultra Smooth Professional Curling Iron to create diagonal curls and used ABBA Firm Finish Hair Spray as a setting spray.
Once the hair was dry I grabbed the hair from the back, pulled upward into a ponytail using the Amped Up Teasing brush and secured with an elastic. I used an E.V. hair pro human hair weft to add volume and length to the ponytail.
Next, I held the Cricket Silkomb Rattail Pro-50 at the center of the ponytail to create the top knot by wrapping hair around the tail comb.
Lastly, we sprayed talcum powder around the hair line, a ton of ABBA Dry Shampoo and then Firm Finish Hair Spray to seal the look
For Stella McCartney, Peter Gray’s inspiration was “real and raw beauty”. He created a corn row part with waves.
Get The Look:

I applied ABBA’s Dry Shampoo and created two tiny cornrow braids on the side of her head and sewed an antique Cartier brooch into the braids using a crochet hook to pull hair in and out of jewelry and into hair comb which was attached to the brooch.
I then used a Ultra Smooth Professional Curling Iron to create waves and sprayed Firm Finish Hair Spray to seal the look.
For Rita Ora, the look was 1930’s Hollywood. Rita’s gorgeous silk gown confection by Marchesa immediately inspired Celebrity Makeup Artist Kathy Jeung to give Rita a strong red lip to match her dress. Kathy added strong brows and bold lashes with a matte skin finish, added glowing shimmery highlights on the cheekbones and lower lash line.

Skincare
Kathy applied Rimmel London Stay Matte Primer all over Rita’s cleansed face to create a smooth mattifying canvas for makeup. She then applied Rimmel London Match Perfection 2 ‘n 1 Concealer in shade Light with her ring finger in a tapping motion underneath Rita’s eyes, erasing dark circles. Kathy applied Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation in Sand with a flat foundation brush in broad strokes over Rita’s face, and blended with a damp sponge, giving Rita a sheer, natural looking matte finish.
Cheeks
Kathy used Rimmel London Kate Moss Sculpting & Highlighting Kit in Golden Sands to highlight the tops of Rita’s cheekbones, above her jawline and down length of her nose. She contoured the hollows under her cheekbones, just under her jawbone and under her chin using a narrow wedge brush and applied the blush using a rounded brush on the apples of her cheeks and extended towards temples.
Kathy added a natural glow and a healthy dose of color by applying Rimmel London’s Natural Bronzer in Sun Bronze, with a large fluffy brush, by dusting lightly along hairline, on temples, on cheeks and under chin. She also blended into the face to soften the contour.
Eyes
Kathy applied the beige shade of the Rimmel London Magnif’Eyes Shadow Contouring Palette in Keep Calm & Wear Gold all over the eyelid to browbone as a base color and browbone highlighter. She used the dark beige matte shade in the eye socket hollow to enhance the crease. She lined Rita’s eyes using Rimmel ScandalEyes Thick & Thin Eyeliner by applying a thin line along the lashes to subtlety blend in the lash line. Lastly, she enhanced Rita’s eye look by using Rimmel London’s brand new volumizing, clump-free Shake It Fresh Mascara to complete the look.
Brows
Kathy gave Rita a structured brow, using Rimmel London Brow This Way Brow Sculpting Kit in Dark Brown. She brushed the powder on to fill in, and extend the shape and give structure to Rita’s eyebrows. She then used Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel in Clear to keep stray hairs in place.
Lips
Kathy lined Rita’s lips using Rimmel London’s Lasting Finish Lip Liner in Red Dynamite to give added shape and staying power. She finished off the lips by applying Rimmel London’s Show Off Lip Velvet in Burning Lava and Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Matte Lipstick in Kiss of Life. She layered Rimmel London #Insta Fix & Matte Translucent Powder in between the layers to keep everything in place.

ALTERNA HAIRCARE sponsored some of the hottest looks on yesterday’s Met Gala Red Carpet.
Stylist Andrew Fitzsimons, Alterna Haircare Brand Ambassador, created Ashley Graham‘s look.
“Ashley’s dress is an event – it’s one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in my life! It’s an amazing deconstructed corset gown, which reminded me of a bouquet of red roses. Because the dress is so dramatic, we decided to go with a simpler look – a side part with a super tight low bun. I wanted a very polished, dryer shine (as opposed to a wet look), which I juxtaposed with chains incorporated into the hair to incorporate the Met Gala theme into the look.” – Andrew Fitzsimons
- On her damp hair, I sprayed the Alterna Haircare Caviar Omega+ Anti-Frizz Dry Oil Mist to provide heat protection and give the hair extra shine and smoothness.
- While damp, I gave her a very deep part on the left side, pulling the bottom section of the part towards the back and the top section of the part towards the right over her head, then back. I dried her hair with the blow dryer, making sure to dry in the direction that I wanted the hair to eventually go (this is a good way to achieve a super smooth, close-to-the-head look without relying on gel).
- I sprayed the Alterna Haircare Caviar Working Hair Spray as I finished smoothing her hair back into a low ponytail, securing with an elastic.
- From there, I pinned two French pins with Jen Atkin X Chloe + Isabel gold and rose gold chains into the base of the ponytail and covered the elastic by wrapping a piece of hair around it.
- I then twisted the ponytail back onto itself into a bun, which gave the illusion that the chains were part of the hair. Secured everything with a French pin and a spritz of the Alterna Haircare Caviar Working Hair Spray.
- Finally, I finished with a bit of Alterna Haircare Caviar Omega+ Anti-Frizz Dry Oil Mist for a polished, camera-ready shine.

“This was Celine’s first Met Gala, and she really wanted to pay homage to Rei Kawakubo and absolutely loves fashion and couture – so she wasn’t afraid to push the envelope and enjoy fashion. We played off her super dark hair and created a structured look that was a bit like a headpiece. She’s an artist and is very hands on, so she was very involved in the process.”
- On wet hair, I prepped the hair with Alterna Haircare Caviar Satin Rapid Blowout Balm from mid-lengths to ends apply Caviar Thick & Full Volume Mousse on roots of the hair and began to blow dry with a big round brush. Even though we’re pulling the hair back, it was important to give the hair luster and a high quality.
- Once dry, full of body and smooth, I tied it back high into a ponytail. To make the edges of the ponytail free from flyaways, I used a small spritz of Alterna Haircare Caviar Working Hair Spray – it’s important to use a dry spray for a look like this so it won’t weigh the hair down.
- Around the hair line to keep it clean, I used a small amount of Caviar Style Grit to keep any edges going back into the ponytail.
- To protect it from the heat, I used the Caviar Perfect Iron Spray and flat ironed certain pieces of the hair.
- The pieces we flat ironed we formed into chignon-like pieces and pinned, and secured with Working Hair Spray.
- Being the night of all fashion nights, shine and couture were key! Alterna Haircare Caviar Omega+ Anti-Frizz Dry Oil Mist gave it beautiful shine without adding any weight – luminous yet weightless.
