How well do you know your cleanser?

How well do you know your cleanser?

mYou love clean skin. You hate your veggies (well, who doesn’t?) but you shop at Whole Foods. But how well do you know your cleanser? Seriously?

One look at half the ingredients found in the standard bottle would make my cat run for the hills. Scary sounding ingredients like “parabens” and “diazolydinyl urea” make algorithms and calculus sound so easy.

We don’t understand why ingredients and labeling on beauty products need be so coy, so secretive. Come on, it’s time to let the truth out in the open like the English monarchy’s dysfunctional little secrets.

We at Butterflydiary want you to flit around with clear skin, but make sure your products are safe! We love a company called Terressentials (www.terressentials.com) based in Maryland. Diana Kaye, the co-founder of the firm, is so passionate about organic and natural products that she puts into her products only what you would want to put in your cuisine.

We recommend the Flower Therapy Facial Cleanser. Aloe Vera extracts, ylang ylang essential oil, lemon and sweet orange essential oils among other organic ingredients make cleansing with this product the equivalent of a Vichy shower (note: acquiring the USDA Certified Organic label is no small feat. These ingredients are the real deal).

“I only put in my products what I would put into my body,” says Kaye. “Toxins in topicals are easily absorbed by the bloodstream and can assault your system.”

So, although it’s the most cumbersome thing you can do (ok, apart from squeezing in “laundry time” between two hot dates), try to read and dissect the ingredients on the label of your product. Many products say they’re organic and natural but few are truly worth of the name.

A recent study found that 55% of non USDA-labeled products touted as “natural” or “organic” actually contained some form of carcinogen*. Yikes!

What does that say about the rest of the products in your medicine cabinet?

What about sunscreen in foundation? I like to have one in mine and I also like the organic qualities. Is it possible to find a product with both?
