Intricate Updos

Not for the faint of heart, this season’s bold updos command attention. It’s hairdressing at its finest, with stylists sculpting twists, knots and braids into styles reminiscent of a glamorous bygone era, when nonchalantly gathering hair into a messy ponytail wasn’t an option.

Backstage at Issa, L’oréal Professionnel session stylist Malcolm Edwards created dramatic couture-coiled hair for a jet-setting woman — no two styles were alike. With a tight ponytail as a base, he teased and curled sections before twisting them into his masterpieces. For Temperley, Edwards’ young, flirty version involved brushed-out pin curls spilling over a topknotL’oréal Professionnel artist Amit Abraham chose two fishtail braid ponytails woven together into a rectangle at Bibhu Mohapatra, which gave a futuristic twist to an otherwise classic low bun.

Artfully Disheveled

Spontaneous, cool-girl esthetic ruled the runways — those street-smart beauties who look effortless, as if they have more important things to tend to than their hair. At Anthony Vaccarello, L’oréal Professionnel stylist Anthony Turner created slightly ruffled, bedhead texture inspired by the women of Paris, made possible by blow-drying volume into the roots, and face-framing sections set into rollers.

L’oréal Professionnel lead stylist Odile Gilbert took her girls out of bed and into the city for Alexis Mabille — she used shine oil on the roots and a curling iron throughout to create imperfect waves reminiscent of being caught in a surprise rain shower. At HoughtonL’oréal Professionnel artist Laura Polko used a bit of mousse pre-curling iron to make the soft waves more beachy than city. And the coolest of the cool, a deconstructed knot at Maison Martin Margiela — L’oréal Professionnel lead stylist Paul Hanlon tied two uneven sections together and secured with elastic.

L’Oréal Professionnel Lift Extrême (sRp $19.00/8.6 oz.) essential for volume and texture when used on damp hair.

Playful Ponytails

A ponytail is not just a ponytail anymore. the classic style can be tweaked to represent different personalities — and different eras. Sweet, young, feminine — the low ponies at Alice + Olivia were reminiscent of iconic 1950’s styles. To achieve the desired throwback effect, L’oréal Professionnel artist Benjamin Mohapi created clean parts in both the center and on the side, and used a large barrel curling iron to fashion a uniform curl at the tails’ ends.

From the 50’s to the 80’s, ponytails at Timo Weiland were playful with an edge. Inspired by street style of 1980’s New York City, L’oréal Professionnel artist Joseph DiMaggio criss-crossed hair at the crown before pulling it all back into a tight ponytail, which was then crimped for texture.
