The summer months are on their way, and I’m really looking forward to feeling the sun on my skin. However, living in Hawaii also means that I have to be extra careful when going out in the sun — making sunblock very important. Brush on Block Instant Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 by Susan Posnick ($30.00) is going to be my best friend this summer, and I am loving its ease of use, convenience and protection!

Developed by Susan Posnick, beauty professional and skincare expert, Brush On Block was created to encourage every man, woman and child to wear sun protection daily. Over 10 years in the making, this product is filled with non-irritating attributes and a mineral formulation that has been sought after in this modern beauty industry.

Brush on Block provides Broad Spectrum SPF 30 protection against both UVA and UVB rays, is water and sweat resistant for up to 80 minutes and is portable enough for you take anywhere.

My Thoughts

I have been incorporating Brush on Block into my daily routine for the last two weeks and have loved its easy and quick application. I HATE SUNBLOCK. I would be lying to you if I said otherwise. As someone who grew up in Hawaii and spent a majority of her time in the ocean surfing… I tried to stay away from the greasy stuff as much as possible.

Most sunblocks are greasy, oily and make my skin break out within 24-hours of use. I have found some that work, but I have also enjoyed the use of powder mineral foundations that I could use in place of daily sunscreen.

Brush on Block is not only VERY convenient, easy to travel with, throw-in-your-purse worthy and super-cute — it really does the job. The twist-up brush makes it easy to take with you and apply when on the go – or touch-up for that matter. The brush twists up, so you can control the size of the brush to a certain extent and get into the areas near your nose, etc. to ensure you are getting maximum coverage.

It is not completely water-proof, and I have had to touch-up if I wash my face, etc. —  it lasts though, and I can tell the difference.

The powder doesn’t have much of a smell, which is great compared to those nasty-smelling or strong coconut scents you get from the drugstore. The color of the powder is skin toned, but blends effortlessly into any skin color. I have darker skin than my children, and tested a small patch on my eldest son — it blended into my skin as well as theirs without leaving any type of tone or coloring behind.

I do have one con with regard to the powder: it has mini shimmers in it, which I am not too keen on. However, I will admit that considering it is a sunblock, I was truly amazed that while being photographed it did not leave a white cast on my skin/face, as I would get with other sunblocks on the market today.

The shimmer in the product was not a fave, but I did like that it gave my skin a little bit of a glow, and it wasn’t nearly as heavy as an eyeshadow – a light shimmer that blended nicely.

The Product And Packaging

It’s simple to use: Simply remove the cap, twist up the brush to your desired size and tap some of the product out (I tap over a napkin, or tissue or in the air if out and about) and then apply the product to your face and body using the attached brush. Fast and easy-to-use.

I don’t use foundation or concealer, but you can apply the Brush On Block over your foundation/makeup application without worry of it ruining your makeup. Because there are natural minerals in the Brush On Block, they sit on top of your skin and reflect the sun’s rays away from your body, instead of soaking and absorbing into your skin causing your pores to be clogged.

That made this so ideal for me, since I have sensitive skin that gets oily very easily; I didn’t have any trouble with it causing irritation, clogging my pores or making me look or feel like a walking disco ball.

While the brush is a great idea and I do enjoy using it, I couldn’t help but wonder how I was going to be able to clean the brush without contaminating the actual sunblock in the tube. I’m a stickler for dirty brushes and haven’t figured out how I could clean it, but, that is probably the #1 thing that I am not too happy with… though it is not going to stop me from using the product – I LOVE IT!

Formulation

It has a very soft, powdery consistency – similar to that of mica or titanium dioxide, and I didn’t even notice it was there once it was applied. This makes it ideal for me because, as a photographer that works with brides and photographs in the sun, this product will blend effortlessly. So far it has not left a white cast on my the skin when flash is used.

Like most mineral foundations, you may need to apply a few times if you are out in the sun for a long period of time – especially if in the ocean. You should not get the formula itself near the eye area – though it can drip into the eye area when you sweat, etc. The formula is practically scentless, soft to the touch (like baby powder) and such a great idea.
