Naturally inspired, yet EFFECTIVE cosmetics are really as hard to find as the Pink Panther diamond. Trust me, I know — having ransacked countless drugstore and high-end department stores in the hope of finding concealers and foundations made with mostly natural ingredients and ending up leaving as disappointed as a kid who didn’t see Mickey Mouse at Disney World. There is a ton of BODYCARE that is organic and natural and most of those products are very effective, but we’re talking about the foundation of your beauty: the foundations, brushes, concealers, primers. Ever since I got my hands on a perfectly movie-star worthy concealer from Alison Raffaele Cosmetics at The Makeup Show New York, I’ve been hooked to the brand like cat to catnip. Check out our Q&A with the founder, Alison Raffaele, below: What is the primary difference between organic and green makeup? As I understand it, organic has to be 100%, while green makeup can have synthetic ingredients in them as well? AR: Precisely. “Green” makeup is more about not containing harmful chemicals, like parabens, talc, mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, aluminum, etc., whereas “Organic” makeup must be made with only certified organic ingredients. It is very difficult to create makeup that is “organic” that still performs, however, many “Green” brands are beginning to use organic ingredients whenever possible. Are you planning an organic line soon? Why or why not? I am looking to use organic ingredients in my formulas, but not to go 100% organic. One thing people must remember is that just because an ingredient is “organic” or “natural” doesn’t mean that it is good for you. In fact many naturally occurring substances - take lead for example - can be very harmful to one’s health. The guideline I generally follow is for an ingredient not to be ranked more than a 3 or a 4 on the Enviormental Working Group’s “Skin Deep” database. Tell us a bit about why you created your line. Was there a niche or need you wanted to fulfill? Alison Raffaele I am proud to say that Alison Raffaele Cosmetics was the first makeup artist developed line to go “Green”. The need I saw that wasn’t being addressed was profession quality makeup that was free of harmful chemicals. As a result, we have a great following among makeup artists!
Friday marked the advent of a very special day in New York City with the CEW Beauty Awards, the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. There were winners, losers and best of all, there was Mario Cantone, the irrepressibly witty and charming MC of the Awards Ceremony (and one of the SATC2 stars) who was presented with his own Beauty Award. The 16th Annual Beauty Awards crowned 31 different products as winners in several categories, spanning from masstige to prestige. In addition to the standard categories, the effervescent Indie Award went to Living Proof, a brand near and dear to my heart because the products have a tendency to make your hair resemble Amber Valleta’s. The celebrities who presented the awards were drool-worthy too. From Malan Breton, Idol finalist Anoop Desai, Supermodel Selita Ebanks, Estelle, Mark Indelicato to Kim Kardashian and Whitney Port, the awards ceremony did not lack star power. Indeed, when the audience applauded, stars fell out of their hands. Now, let’s talk about the beauty winners, shall we? We were not surprised at all to see stars like Vaseline Sheer Infusion with Stratys-3 win the Body Treatment Masstige category because the technology of that product is pretty revolutionary. Nor did we bat an eyelash when Lancome’s Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate won in the Anti-Aging Prestige Category because– let’s face it – if a product can capture the power of your youthful genes it deserves to have its own country named after it. We have always been crazy about Lancome’s Oscillation Powerbooster Primer and were thrilled with Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain won in the prestige lip product category. Living Proof’s success is well deserved. The Indie company really understands hair issues and attitude with its groundbreaking anti-frizz technology (the brains behind the brand is an MIT professor, Dr. Bob Langer…need we say more?). So what was one of the upsets? According to Ron Robinson, cosmetic chemist and founder of BeautyStat.com, one of the biggest upsets was that “Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash did not win because the technology was quite strong.” It lost the crown to Olay Body Wash Plus Tone Enriching Ribbons. Another upset in our eyes was that Garnier Skin Renew Awakening Face Moisturizer won in the mass category over Olay Pro-X SPF 30. Beauty Trends at CEW
In its annual Beauty Awards issue, Women's Health gives us their professional recommendations on products they vet from a list of more than 100 newcomers on the market, and the list amounted to an impressive 55. Want to know what they were and their rationale? We weigh the results. Hair The editors were crazy about Catwalk by Tigi Curlesque Strong Mousse for Curly Hair; Umberto Beverly Hills Dry Clean Dry Shampoo; Aveeno Nourish + Shine Shampoo and Conditioner for shine boosting; and Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair for leave-in conditioner. We love the Aveeno Nourish + Shine combination because the hair is extraordinarily silky and soft after use --like chartreuse. Face Editors loved the Jurlique Fruit Enzyme Exfoliator; Origins Start Over Age-Erasing Moisturizer with Mimosa; Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew The Brusher Gel-Cleanser and Patricia Wexler Dermatology Intensive Deep Wrinkle Treatment. We agree with the pick of Origins and Patricia Wexler. Origins has never failed to surprise us with their soothing and delightful treats, from their Peace of Mind gumballs to their mimosa moisturizer (you can skip the drink at brunch). Wexler's Intensive Deep Wrinkle Treatment worked for us, and is great for people of all ages. Body Editors picked St. Ives Intensive Healing Hand Cream, Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion SPF 60 for Face/Body; Jo Malone London Vanilla & Anise Body Cream for Best Smelling Scent and Flora by Gucci for Sexiest New Scent. We can't get over anything by Jo Malone, and although we haven't tried this body cream, the name sounds absolutely delish -- like a scoop of ice cream. Makeup We looked at all the picks (readers, experts and editors), and agree with and love these makeup items. Okay, CoverGirl LashBlast Volume mascara brings out the best in all of our lashes. And Burt's Bees Replenishing Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil is really something else. There's nothing that beats MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack for eyeliner, and we give kudos to the experts for picking that. As we absolutely agree with their pick of Guerlain's Terracotta Bronzing Powder and Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation.
We’ve all shared that really pesky problem of chipped nails. It seems that no matter what, nail polish just can’t stay on past a few days (the same duration as your average salon hairstyle). And no girl just wants to keep doling out her hard-earned dollars to the manicurist only to see her hard work disappear quicker than the blink of an eye. Well, say hello to CND’s Shellac, the first Hybrid Nail Color. This product applies like polish, and stays on beautifully for as long as 14 days. SERIOUSLY! 14 days, which makes it perhaps the longest lasting polish on the planet, unless the martians have discovered one themselves. The shellac paints on like real polish, and has a base coat and a top coat that cures in a UV light setting so that there is absolutely no drying time. I was very fortunate to speak to Jan Arnold, the co-founder of CND, who said that the R&D process for this nail lacquer was five years. And this is a glory song for all housewives out there - who do the dishes and keep the house sparkling clean while wanting something totally chip free.

We've loved her ever since the days of Almost Famous, where she played the ingenue and groupie Penny Lane. And how can we not forget her in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days where she plays the part of the crazy reporter who...
