Now that summer is finally over, it’s time to prep our hair for those upcoming cooler and drier months. And just like how we slowly transition into our fall wardrobe, gradually changing up our haircare routine is essential for proper hair health. Not sure how to go from fun-in-the-sun to autumn-ready locks?

We’ve consulted stylist experts to answer all your burning questions, whether it be about changing up your shampoo or giving your hair that necessary detox it probably deserves.

Add More Moisture

You may have that go-to favorite, but believe it or not, switching up your shampoo and conditioner as the seasons change is highly recommended by expert stylists, as they find that once hair becomes too used to a product, it stops working altogether.

“I find that changing up your shampoo and conditioner is a common habit among our clients, as they feel like it’s actually a good thing to switch it up. There also seems to be a belief that your hair gets used to a particular product, and subsequently does not respond to it in quite the same way,” says Damian Santiago, Co-Owner of Mizu New York Salon.

When shopping for that fall-friendly shampoo, Dop Dop Salon Master Stylist Lori Zabel recommends finding products with more moisture. “Hair usually needs more nourishment after the summer. The sun, sand, salt water and chlorine can definitely take its toll. I recommend a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner like Redken All Soft or Redken Clear Moisture,” Zabel suggests.

Read The Ingredient Label, Carefully

For Keila Rokkan, Expert Stylist at Verb Hair Care, staying away from shampoos with harsh chemicals and additives is also a key tip to remember. “Drugstore brands use harsh chemicals that give the illusion that your hair is healthy, but over time they build up and damage the hair.

To find your best shampoo, pick up the bottle and read the ingredients. Stay away from chemicals like: methylparaben, butylparaben, polyparaben, sodium lauryl sulfate and formaldehyde. Verb Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner are safe and always $14,” Rokkan explains.

Detox!

Now for that necessary detox, honing in on a fixed regimen is always a good way to go. “The way to detox summer hair is with some focused TLC. Cleanse, rehydrate, and rebuild with a mask or deep treatment,” Damian Santiago suggests.

But if you’re looking for a more intense treatment, the salon route is always a smart way to go. “Come in to Dop Dop Salon for a detox clarifying treatment to help remove the summer build-up and balance the hair’s porosity. Don’t forget the weekly treatment and a great leave-in like Redken Blonde Idol BBB Spray,” Lori Zabel adds.

The Best Styles, Cuts, Colors & Accessories For Fall Hair

Want the skinny on what’s hot in hair? Take these expert suggestions for that sexy fall look. “Fall hair is big on simplicity. Think middle parts, sleek[ness], no frizz but lots of natural texture. Keep the hair simple and go wild with accessories. Big clips, braids-in scarves, ribbons and even the scrunchie is making an appearance this fall,” states Rokkan.

Want a big change? Don’t be afraid to go bold with color or cuts. “Going into fall is the best time to try new colors! The colors to obsess over this season are ones with flavor like cognac, maple, pumpkin, toasted almond, cherry wood, cinnamon and golden apricot,” Lori Zabel describes.

I’m definitely going to do more hair treatments like hair masks which I love doing with at home products. I’m going darker in color along with a trim to get rid of all the damage I did to it this summer! Great review
