Ever since news broke that the Brazilian Blowout contained the dangerous carcinogen formaldehyde, women everywhere have been rethinking their need for smooth, frizz-free hair. Remember that we reported about it earlier? Sure, the results the Brazilian Blowout provides are fabulous, but are the potentially dangerous side effects? Not so much!

In the meantime, many companies and salons have been pitching their alternatives to this miracle treatment. BeautyStat got the details on one of these alternatives, the Cadiveu Brazilian Thermal Reconstructer, from Becker Chicaiza, who offers this treatment at his Greenwich, Connecticut salon, Becker Salon.

The Cadiveu Brazilian Thermal Reconstructer, a hair fiber strengthener and smoother, offers all the coveted results of the Brazilian Blowout, without all the chemicals, Becker said: “This offers a safer way to get rid of frizzy, unmanageable hair and achieve a smooth, silky look with optimum shine. We now recommend this to our clients who are hesitant about the Brazilian Blowout but want the same results.”

According to Becker, his salon started offing this treatment after the recent Brazilian Blowout controversy.

“We began offering this safer alternative to the Brazilian Blowout after the reports about the dangers of formaldehyde. We know that our clients love the look and feel that the Brazilian Blowout provides but were cautious due to the news reports,” he said.

Although it produces the same results as the Brazilian Blowout, Becker explained how the Cadiveu Brazilian Thermal Reconstructer works in a different way. Instead of straightening hair with formaldehyde, this process serves as a smoothing treatment. Liquid keratin attaches to the rough hair cuticles, retaining moisture and shine.

“This product is formaldehyde-free and instead contains Keratin, Cocoa, Panthenol and ph2.8,” he said. “Cadiveu products are safe for both the client and the customer. Keratin is a natural protein that comes from hair and plants.”

Priced similarly to other traditional Brazilian Blowouts, Becker’s Salon offers this 90-minute keratin treatment for $399, which includes a haircut and an after product. So far, it seems like a pretty good alternative, if you ask Becker.

“Our clients have been extremely happy with our alternative treatment. There is no health risk in the process for either the stylist or the client. The results have been excellent – beautifully smooth and silky hair,” he said. “Clients can use the same Brazilian Blowout after care products to keep their hair looking great.”

Jon Steinick, hair stylist and former contestant on Bravo’s Shear Genius, chimed in on the Brazilian Blowout debate and this particular alternative treatment. Although he says he would recommend keratin treatments over the Brazilian Blowout, Steinick still isn’t 100% sold on the process in general.

“The keratin treatments seem to be a little more successful….But I just don’t necessarily seem to think that [anyone has] it perfected yet,” he said.

In the long run, using off the counter smoothing products might be a better alternative to getting these treatments, Steinick said, because even though the product might disappear as soon as you get water in your hair, “at least there’s no permanent structural damage done to the hair.”

After all, you never know what kinds of long-term effects these treatments have, Steinick said, since they haven’t been around long enough for anyone to really investigate the side effects.

“I just think it’s kind of a game of Russian roulette with your hair.”

I got the formaldehyde one.(twice)..believe me. its the awesomest thing i ever did to my hair. i havent regretted it for one single moment. now I will try the keratin treatment once this grows out completely. nothing like smooth shiny hair!! it looks heathy and feels healthy. i guess it depends on how you care for your hair as to what the long-term effects are.

I have no need for this kind of treatment. My hair is pin straight but the after pictures are gorgeous! We take risks everyday with any product we use. Thanks

I did the brazilian blowout at my salon and it worked fabulously!!! I then purchased the Shielo Hydrate shampoo and conditioner with the Shielo Bounce Style Creme.

Well let me tell you – it has prolonged the effects of the blowout from the salon!! Even if you don’t do the salon treatment the shampoo and conditioner are great for your hair!! My hair is not frizzy! It is silky soft and manageable!!!
