Outside of sci-fi flicks, you can’t alter something that’s dead—yet that’s what new treatments are claiming to do when they promise to strengthen hair.

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Keratin Intensive Treatment, Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, and Rusk DeepShine Smooth Keratin Treatment contain either keratin or wheat proteins to seal the hair cuticle and protect it from damage.

These products won’t make your hair grow in any tougher, but they can act like a suit of armor for the hair that’s there. “They target the areas of the cuticle that need the most repair and help strengthen the bonds within the hair,” says cosmetic chemist and founder of BeautyStat.com, Ron Robinson. Fine hair can benefit, too. “It has less protein than thick hair, which makes
it weaker,” says Robinson. Just look for a light gel or lotion formula (click on the image below to see the article as it appeared in print). —ANGELIQUE SERRANO

I love an honest assessment of products in magazines, as it really helps me to sift through the big claims and find the truth. Born with the hair of a fluffy kitten, I am forever on the lookout for anything that will help to build on its fine texture. My sister suffers from the same gene pool, so I forwarded the article so she can buy half the products and I’ll do the other and then we can swap so that we can see which works best for each of us!
