As the warm weather nears our hair seeks a more carefree, brighter look. But, before you rush off to your stylist with a picture of Kate Moss and her fabulous gray roots, think twice… this season, the biggest hair trends are tailored to you!

Highlights are the easiest selection when trying to lighten your hair, but stylists are ditching the foil and transforming into true artists. Balayage is the new trend and translates to “hair painting.” Instead of foils, stylists draw (freehand) a series of highlights onto your hair. This technique allows the stylist to ditch the streak look and create unique spacing and widths resulting in a more natural appearance. The benefits of this technique go beyond a great trend or natural look. These type of highlights grow out more naturally because of their unique spacing — with less money spent at the salon — but also less time wasted, especially when you can be at the beach.

She states that foil, as a conductor of heat, “processes more quickly and aggressively, which can cause color to look brassy on brunettes.” A big plus for those brunettes looking to go a little lighter this summer!
The benefits of this technique prove better than using traditional foils, but the best is yet to come: Growing out balayage transforms your hair into another trend of the summer, ombre hair color or Illuminata. Towards the end of the summer when you’ve had your share of the summer sun and begin the transition into your fall self, keeping with the trends will be simple. Leaving your hair to grow out naturally will create the soft transitional ombre effect seen on celebs like Gisele Bundchen (pictured above) and Rachel Bilson. It might need a quick touch-up, but the overall time, money and damage to your hair should be minimal.

What is so fantastic about both these trends is that no matter what color hair you have a stylist can tailor the color to match your look. Just remember a general rule of thumb: keep cool with cool and warm with warm. If you have pink undertones, stick with cooler colors; if you have yellow undertones stick with warmer colors.

Posted at 15:02h, 21 JuneI think it’s coming into the spotlight again as I had a great stylist at Serge Normant in NYC do this treatment to me for the first time since going blonde three years ago and my highlights and overall look seemed more natural than ever. Yes, it has been around a while but I do believe most salons still use foils. I am not a hair stylist either but had always had highlights done by foils just up until two months ago.
