Before

Hair troubles know no bounds, no matter your skin color. Women of all ethnic backgrounds can have unruly, kinky, curly hair. BeautyStat’s Ron Robinson states, “Caucasian women can have kinky, curly hair and seek out relaxers to straighten it. Hair relaxing is not just for women of African descent.”

Read on to read the hair confessions of Nanci Alderman, a former beauty executive, who has been dealing with hair relaxing treatments and coming to terms with her “bushy” hair all her life. Find out how she manages her hair, which product she swears by and some amazing before/after photos!

Meet Nanci Alderman. This is her hair story…

“I’ve had my hair relaxed since I was around ten-years-old. For many years, it was done professionally. And for many years, I’ve also been doing it myself at home.

Have you ever noticed that there are many natural redheads with kinky/bushy/very curly hair? I notice them all the time because that’s what my hair was like before I started relaxing it, and for a period of time some years ago when I let it go “natural.”

Yes, I am a natural redhead. It was a bright, beautiful copper color when I was younger. But strangely, rather than going gray, it has gone darker.

More about my hair texture: It’s quite thick, and if I let it air-dry, it gets very frizzy and bushy. As it grows out after relaxing [treatments], it gets tight, little waves. You rarely see that as I get it blown out regularly. However, in the humidity, the hair next to my neck curls up and just does its own thing.

When I was little, it grew out like a bush, not down and long. Once, I took an auburn-colored scarf of my mother’s, cut it into strips and bobby-pinned it over my hair, imagining that it looked like I had long hair. I actually went out with it on! Pathetic, but that’s how badly I wanted long, straight hair.

Last year, by chance and, more probably, because I couldn’t find other products I had previously used, I ended up trying SoftSheen-Carson Optimum Care Salon Collection No-Lye Relaxer ($8.99).

This product is unlike any other relaxer — lye or no-lye — I’ve ever used. It keeps every promise it makes on the package: it leaves hair with “exceptional softness and shine.” It claims 9X less breakage; I had no breakage.

And while shampooing and conditioning, my hair felt silky, soft and smooth — unlike other relaxers that left my hair all over the bathtub and left the hair on my head comparable to a bird’s nest. None of the elements have a chemical or otherwise unpleasant odor. And it didn’t burn my skin either.

I know this is the old-fashioned way, unlike Brazilian Keratin treatments and the like. And you need to style your hair afterwards. However, based on my experience, this is a newfangled, old-fashioned product and I love it!”

I bought the regular strenght one -optimum brown box product

I remember trying this when. Was 10-11yo and was so frustrated cause i didnt see any changes in my hair, truth is i didnt know how to use it.

8 years later i find it again and bought it with its neutralizing shampoo.. Not sure if the regular one for medium normal texture is the right one for me , i think the super strenght pne would have destroyed my hair, cause its a mix of coarse and fine hair and im caucasian european..

Even tho i feel like it kind of fried my hairlne , where the hair seems t be the most rebelious and coarse , i hope its just because i didnt rinse the product properly.

    2nd attempt ! Haha
    Wish me luck

You have been culturally brainwashed into believing that there’s something wrong with your natural hair texture. That’s nonsense. You don’t have to look like a German milkmaid to be beautiful. There are beautiful women all over the world with all different kinds of hair.
