THE TREND WE SAW: A MODERNIZED, TEXTURIZED VERSION OF THE BUN

Christian Siriano seldom disappoints. Actually, let’s make that never.

His show last evening reminded us of the romantic, Marie-Antoinette style age, with his chief inspirations being the cultures of Africa, India and China.

Think beaded necklaces, floor-length dresses with more ruffles than Christina Hendrick’s Oscar gown. As for the hair, well it’s bound to be really regal and royal, right? Antoinette Beenders for Aveda created a texturized bun using Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

The result is a glam updo that isn’t stodgy or ancient – it’s been thoroughly modernized and reflective of all the cultures mixing and blending together.

THE TRENDS WE SAW: CORAL LIPS, SMOKY EYES, HALF-MOON NAILS

At the Vena Cava show, we saw a brilliant, bold coral lip done by Christian McCulloch for MAC Cosmetics. The hair was done by Ted Gibson for Beauty.com and the nails by Nonie Creme of Butter London.

The inspiration came from Michelle Pfeiffer’s look in the movie, Scarface. The smoky eye is back as well (Spring is obviously not for the faint of heart). Technically, the lip is a bright, peachy matte (if you use red or brown tones, McCullough says this typically makes you look older). Ted Gibson skipped the bun updo in favor of a back-combed, texturized hairdo and finished the look with a tres chic scarf.

As for the nails, the half moon (which was very symbolic of status in the 1920’s) was the trend of the moment– and I’m sure you’ll agree that it really defines elegance. Nonie applied three coats of the espresso color Yummy Mummy to short press-on nails, and then painted a half moon using the color Jack Black above the bottom cuticle.
