These Ambient Lighting Powders ($45.00) from Hourglass Cosmetics are a ground-breaking collection of finishing powders that diffuse and soften the way light is reflected on your skin. Available in six “lights”, I chose Dim for its neutral peach tone — and it certainly added a neutral, overall look to my skin. Light was reflected everywhere making my skin appear flawless.

Unlike traditional powders, Ambient Lighting Powders alter the skin’s appearance by manipulating and filtering out harsh light — similar to the “blur” effect that is trending. It’s a perceived appearance that is changed due to the “photoluminescent technology” as these micron-size, color-correcting particles emulate healthier looking skin.

“I learned early on how different types of light can truly flatter the complexion,” says Carisa Janes, Hourglass CEO and Founder. “Growing up, my mother had pink light bulbs in all of the lamps throughout the house. She loved pink light because it was the softest and most flattering, and she always wanted to look good.”

Janes was inspired to create a new generation of powders that could be customized according to the desired lighting effect.

Shades available:

Diffused — soft, warm, pale yellow to reduce redness and give skin clarity.

Ethereal — opalescent, sheer cool white powder that mimics the moonlit glow even in broad daylight.

Radiant — sun-kissed golden beige powder that extends your summer glow, or can enhance the overall complexion with a subtle, believable warmth.

Mood — a soft, sheer lavender pink powder that mimics the softest, most forgiving light to reveal your brightest complexion.

Dim — sampled/pictured; neutral peach beige that blurs imperfections and highlights a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones.

Luminous — champagne-pearl powder that creates a soft, incandescent candlelit glow for either day or night.
