Anne Beal, M.D., M.P.H., is a medical researcher and former senior executive at a global bio pharmaceutical company headquartered in Paris, and that was where she saw the need to create
Absolute Joi Skincare. While living in Paris, Dr. Beal found her skin was unhealthy and breaking out, even after using the skincare products available in the beauty capital of the world. In addition, her daughters were also having problems with irritation and facial breakouts due to their sensitive skin, and as a board-certified pediatrician, she had taken care of many patients with similar issues, including eczema.
Dr. Beal wanted to develop products for herself and her family using her medical knowledge so she visited a store that sold ingredients for making beauty products at home. It was filled with Black and Brown women like herself – clearly other women of color felt that the existing products were not meeting their needs.
That’s when Dr. Beal started to research and found that
70% of women of color said the products currently available don’t work for them. Through her research, she learned the key issues for people with melanin-rich skin are:
- differences in anti-aging, as most don’t have fine lines and wrinkles but do have marks and discoloration
- problems with dark marks and hyperpigmentation
- high rates of skin sensitivity
- increase exposure to questionable ingredients using in personal care products
These specific concerns provided the road map to develop Absolute Joi, an inclusive,
clean beauty brand that offers clean, effective, and easy to use skincare products designed for melanin-rich skin. Using scientifically-based active ingredients, combined with soothing botanicals, Absolute Joi products are designed to
balance and nourish Black skin, while addressing common issues for melanin-rich skin. Recognizing that many people with melanin-rich skin have sensitivities like her daughters, Dr. Beal uses no fragrances, dyes, unnecessary fillers, or other common irritants.
This three-product set retails for $39.00 and promises to cleanse without over stripping. I began with the
Sunflower & Morning Fresh Cleansing Oil, which I applied with cotton balls. Very rich and soothing, but also good for removing makeup, even eyeliner and eyeshadow. Then I used the
Hydrating Gel Foam Cleanser, which lathered and left my face very clean and fresh. Although I don’t typically use toner, these products were meant to be used together and I wanted to get the full effect. The
Balancing PH Toner did leave my skin soft and ready for the next phase, which was the Skin Refining Night Oil with Retinol and Vitamins C & E ($57.00).
This is the last skincare step before bed and it is a nourishing oil with retinol as well as vitamins C and E. It promises to fight early signs of aging while also
fading dark marks and hyper pigmentation.
I only used this for a few nights so I haven’t seen the full effect yet. But, my skin was so soft and smooth in the morning. The product caused no irritation at all, which is sometimes an issue with retinol-based formulas. In fact, this is the only retinol-based product that didn’t adversely affect my skin. I will be using it for a long time to come! I can’t wait to get the retinol benefits with none of the problems.
