The KeSARI Pore Minimizing Indian Clay Masque ($29.50) draws upon ancient Indian bridal traditions. According to KeSARI, “The pre-ceremonial ritual of rubbing Ubtan (a mixture of Indian spices and saffron) all over the bride’s face, hands, and feet to rejuvenate and brighten skin dates back centuries and is modernized with this masque.” Featuring Triphala Radiance® Complex, saffron, Indian clay, kokum butter, aloe vera, and hyaluronic acid, the masque claims to “deep-clean, minimize the appearance of pores, and moisturize the skin.” It can be safely used 2-3 times week.

Following the directions, I applied the mask liberally to a clean face and neck. It went on very smooth and creamy, kind of like icing on an éclair. As it dried, it seemed to disappear into my skin and did not form a crackly surface the way many masques do. I left it on for about 10 minutes (as seen in the picture below) and removed it with a warm washcloth.

I liked the feel of this mask very much — it was not harsh or stripping in any way, but instead felt very gentle and coddling. My skin felt fresh and soft afterwards and I did not need to apply a moisturizer. I think this will be an excellent wintertime mask that I will be using often to give my skin a little extra TLC.

According to Grand Central Beauty, the S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting Mask ($75.00) is a “unique combination of active mask powder + exclusive intensive booster delivers an array of clinically proven results in as little as ONE use.” S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for all the benefits the product is said to provide:

Smooths. Moisturizes. Anti-Aging. Redness-Reduction. Tones

In addition, the mask is said to be “ideal for fighting the effects of everyday lifestyle stressors on the skin” and “can be introduced into your current regimen.” It’s suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and has been allergy tested. It is also free of parabens, sulfates, petro-chemicals and phthalates and is not tested on animals.

It does contain seaweed extracts for skin smoothing; an exclusive water-activated vitamin infusion for 24-hour moisture retention; natural marine algae for anti-aging and wrinkle reduction and soothing botanicals for skin brightening and redness reduction. In addition, it contains a “blend of mineral-rich marine powders [to] draw out blackheads, refine pores and provide tone and elasticity to skin that has been stressed by age, the elements and poor beauty habits.”

To use, I combined one capsule Active Mask Powder, 1 capsule tap water, 1 vial Intensive Booster and mixed vigorously with the spatula until I formed a smooth, creamy paste. I applied it immediately and within fifteen minutes, it had formed a thick, crumbly surface that I was able to massage off with my fingers. I used a washcloth to wipe away any residue.

I would describe this one as more of a “tough love” mask, because of the massaging action. But afterwards, my skin did feel great and was very rosy and glowing. I see this as an excellent product for summer use, but even in the winter, I might use it once or twice a month, and balance it with the KeSARI mask described above.
