Don’t tuck sun protection away with your swimwear this fall! You may not be exposing a lot of your body for the sun to reach in the fall and winter months, but if your face is exposed, you’re still vulnerable! Powerful UVA rays are around all year and can cause significant damage to your skin.

Applying a moisturizer with SPF 30 to your face is a good start; couple that with a daily dose of an antioxidant supplement like Heliocare® ($29.99; Walgreens). An extract from a well-studied tropical fern called Polypodium leucotomos, Heliocare® has been shown to help maintain the skin’s ability to protect against sun-related effects and aging.

When taken orally as a daily dietary supplement, by the brand name Heliocare® marketed by Ferndale Healthcare, Inc., it has been shown to help maintain the skin’s ability to protect against sun-related effects and aging. Polypodium leucotomos has been evaluated for over 30 years by scientists and dermatologists in several countries, including the United States.

According to Englewood, Colorado Dermatologist Joel Cohen, MD, Director of AboutSkin Dermatology in Colorado:

“Free radicals (reactive oxygen species) wreak havoc on our whole body. In the skin, they can damage cells, tissue and support structures. Sunscreen together with Heliocare helps to prevent propagation of free radicals.

We are seeing more and more skin cancer among the US population,” comments Dr. Cohen. “And we are seeing people present at younger and younger ages, even around age 20.

Skin cancer rates are climbing, and 1/5 Americans will get some type of skin cancer in their lifetime. In Colorado, and some other states, these rates are even higher due to high altitude (4-6% more UV penetration for every 1,000 feet), 300+ days of sunshine, plus an outdoor lifestyle.”

Dermatologists and photo-biologists worldwide have long cautioned people about the dangers of exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Clinical studies have demonstrated that these rays can cause irreversible damage resulting in older-looking and less resilient skin.

This damage can cause wrinkles, thickening, dark spots, enlarged or broken blood vessels in addition to skin cancer. Topical sunscreens play an important role in protecting skin from the sun.

However, many environmental factors can reduce the effectiveness of a sunscreen. A day of high humidity, for example, may cause you to sweat more, potentially reducing the effectiveness of your sunscreen.

Outdoor sports can also make you sweat, thereby diluting the effectiveness of your sunscreen. Sun protection via a daily dietary supplement such as Heliocare® is not affected by sweating, swimming or other external factors.

“This is why so many dermatologists are very excited about Heliocare®,” says Dr. Cohen.

”Everyone still has to use sunscreens correctly,” he cautions. “It has to contain the right ingredients, be reapplied every two hours, and more frequently if swimming, sweating or toweling off.

Plus, we also encourage wearing hats, swim shirts, and sunglasses. We recognize that Heliocare® has a lot of great qualities and more and more true scientific data views it as a good way to protect from the damaging UV rays of the sun, which can cause skin to look old before its time.”

As a dietary supplement, take one capsule daily in the morning. When prolonged sun exposure is anticipated, take one capsule one half hour before exposure to sunlight and a second capsule two to three hours later.

Heliocare® retails for $29.99 and can be purchased at pharmacies and fine retailers nationwide. For more information, please visit www.heliocare.com.

I have often wondered if these vitamins really work or not. After reading your review here, I am curious to find out for myself. Yes I would try Heliocare…if it worked for you, maybe it will do wonders for me!
