Three Homemade Goodies: Organic Products We Love (& Ones We Don’t)

Madonna once said, “Never forget to dream.” I often dream of a world of natural, organic cosmetics. A world where beauty is no longer harmful to the body or the environment. Being that I am a hands on kind of gal, I decided to try to make this dream of natural, organic products a reality. I tried my hand at three do-it-yourself, beauty products, and give you a clear verdict.

Homemade Body Scrub

I love a good, full body exfoliation. Yet, no matter what brand I buy and try, I feel like I spend way too much for too little product. So I tried this simple, three part concoction one day, and I couldn’t be happier. First, you need a glass cup or jar to hold the scrub. Then get a bag of organic, light brown sugar. Scoop about three tablespoons of the sugar into the glass cup. Then grab a bottle of organic honey. Squeeze enough honey to make a circle over the brown sugar. Then add a drop or two of pure lavender oil to the mixture. Rub the sugar all over your bod, rinse, and reveal a smooth, soft healthy glow from hand to toe! I keep the ingredients tightly sealed, yet ready to access, in my bathroom. Store in a cool, dark area to keep the sugar fresh.

Homemade Hair Spray?

I found this recipe online, and for the amount of moola I spend on hair products, I thought I would give it a whirl. You will need a spray bottle, one large orange and two small lemons. Over heat, draw three cups of water. Add the sliced orange and lemons. Let the fruit and liquid boil for 30 minutes. Then strain the liquid into a bowl and cool for approximately 20 minutes. Discard the fruit. Once the liquid cools, pour into your spray bottle and set in the fridge until you are ready to begin using.

Well, after I did all of the above, all I found I was spraying on my tousled tresses was fruit water. I found no hold what-so-ever, and a waste of perfectly delicious fruit. Give it a try, and see if your results vary. Maybe I need to add another ingredient, but for now, I am going back to my trusted, professional hairspray.

Vegan Body Oil

This one is super simple, and oh-so-effective. You need one item: Organic golden jojoba oil. This golden goodness is the ultimate treat for your thirsty skin. It has the ability to lock in moisture, resulting in smooth, silky skin without any parabens! I love to lather up after my nighttime shower. After I towel off, I put a little oil in my hands and work it into my skin. The glow you will wake up to in the morning is the perfect way to start the day.

Robinson Jeffers once said, “The greatest beauty is organic wholeness, the wholeness of life and things, the divine beauty of the universe.” To me, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing something and than doing it yourself.

My passion for all things organic has me on a quest to see how many natural beauty products I can make myself. I know I probably won’t love them all, but it doesn’t hurt to try!
