Best Hairstyle Trends 2017, 2018: NYFW Spring Summer 2016: Braids, Ponytails, Modern Chignons Looks, Cuts

Intricate braids and chignons took center stage at the NYFW Spring/Summer 2016 shows. And believe it or not, these are styles that you can achieve right at home. We’ll show you step-by-step and even fill you in on which products to use. You’ll be strutting down the street (your own personal catwalk) looking fab!

Pulling inspiration from a 1950’s black and white photograph of her grandparents, Marissa Webb’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection combines the structure of military uniform with the femininity of delicate dresses. TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu found her inspiration for the two hair looks from the juxtaposition of the soft fabrics and structured lines of the collection.

Get The Look:

1. Prep the hair with Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray and rough dry it in. The goal is to get added volume and texture into the hair

2. Roughly go through the hair section by section, adding in the Phyto Professional Matte Texturizing Paste. This will give the hair the tackiness to hold the look together.

3. Divide the hair into five sections: one at the top, one on each side and two in the back.

4. Within each of these sections, pull the hair back and tie the hair into square knots. The result will look like a knot-braid, which will be secured with an elastic hair band at the end.

5. Finish by misting Phytolaque Soie Hairspray to keep in place

“It’s the 30th anniversary of Hervé Léger so we’re embracing a new direction with a more organic quality in our handwork and elements of nature incorporated into the collection so we wanted to collaborate with Orlando on a softer braid and really play with texture more than we have before.”- Lubov Azria, Hervé Léger, TRESemmé Designer Partner SS’16

“It’s a new softer look for our Hervé Léger girl this season, she’s still creating a strong statement with the braid but we’ve played with making this more relaxed with purposely pulled out with loose pieces that frame her face and create beautiful movement when she walks.”- Orlando Pita, New York Fashion Week Ambassador for TRESemmé

Step 1: Start by washing your hair using Perfectly (un)Done Shampoo and Conditioner and towel dry.

Step 2:  Apply Runway Max The Volume Root Lifting Cream from the roots to ends and blow dry with a round bristle brush.

Step 3: Create a deep side part and then starting from the crown, begin French braiding down across the forehead. Feed hair from underneath so the braid is raised up and let a few strands of hair fall onto the forehead to create additional texture.

Step 4: Secure the braid into a low pony at the nape of the neck with a small elastic and pull over your shoulder.

Step 5: Finish the look by spraying Perfectly (un)Done Ultra Brushable Hold Hair Spray for light hold.

The VICTOR ALFARO S/S16 runway show displayed the talents of power duo Pat McGrath and Eugene Souleiman on make-up and hair respectively. When it came to hair, Souleiman said that he was struck by the graphic, asymmetrical and linear lines of the Alfaro collection. “When I looked at the knitwear, it was as if it had almost been braided.” Souleiman gathered a triangular section of each model’s hair somewhere on the head and created a braid tight to the head. They all looked like they were from the same family but they were not exactly the same. One braid down the center, the other down the side, and another diagonally placed. The idea was strong but minimal, just like the clothing.

Odile Gilbert for Kérastase Paris created looks for the Jason Wu show. The inspiration behind the look was mid-century modernism. Odile created a new version of the chignon, featuring a slicked back style, set at back of head, perfectly in between ears. The resulting look was a very sleek chignon with a wet-look finish. The exposed neck added a hint of sex appeal without being too overstated.
