Dr. Rolanda Johnson Wilkerson, P&G Senior Scientist, and Judi Steward, resident BeautyStat cosmetic chemist and formulator, tell us the negative and positive attributes of using oil-based hair-coloring formulas. Dr. Rolanda Johnson Wilkerson said:

Negatives:

– Testing has shown that oil-based permanent formulas are not effective at evenly depositing color onto the hair. Additionally, color is not sustained for as long compared to water-based permanent hair colors.

Oil-based formulas can also be hard to wash out of the hair, have reduced manageability (the hair is harder to comb through) and tend to weigh the hair down.

– Hair testing has also demonstrated that water-based formulas better preserve the integrity of the hair shaft, whereas oil-based formulas demonstrate damage to the cuticles with severely uplifted cuticles.

Positives:

Certain oils tend to be moisturizing for the hair, however, with so many other adverse side effects to the coloring experience, this positive attribute is minimal.

Judi Steward assured that the high oil content in the product will ensure moisturizing benefits.

I had a coupon to for Olia hair color. my roots were gray from my last professional hair coloring 7 weeks ago.
I like the color (light brown)but not crazy about the results. I left the coloring on my roots for 30 minutes. It did not completely cover the gray. My hair was soft but I was looking for something to cover the gray. I probably wouldn’t have purchased it, if I did not have a coupon. I don’t recommend this product if your roots are really gray. I won’t purchase this product again. Hope this helps those who have not purchased this yet.
