Who doesn’t love a fresh cut and color…especially when you’ve never colored your hair before? So, when the folks at AVEDA invited me to The Establishment, an LA-based AVEDA salon for a cut/color – I knew I would be in good hands. I’ve had the same boring locks my entire life — it was time for a change.

Hair trends are continuously changing… Do I go for ombre, or a lob? The possibilities are endless. I wanted to maintain a natural style that looked sun-kissed and three dimensional. My lovely stylist Priscila suggested I go for a shape-up cut (from $60), followed by a Balayage color (from $200) with Olaplex treatment.

“Balayage is painting of the hair making it a soft sun kissed look while adding dimension.  It brings lightness to the ends without creating any stripes or a line as the hair grows in, unlike what traditional highlights can produce.”

Unlike traditional coloring treatments, balayage creates a natural look that doesn’t require as much upkeep. I could continue coloring it, or easily grow it without having to chop off all my hair.

Step 1. Priscila cut my hair, giving it soft face-shaping layers.

Step 2. The Balayage bleach with Aveda enlightener was applied to the hair. Bleach opens outside the cuticle to take away pigment. Each section was painted with the bleach in various patterns to create a natural look.  The stands were then sealed with foils. The entire head took about 45 minutes to an hour, and then I sat with the foils on my head for an additional 30 minutes.

Step 3. Bleach was washed out and a toner in Deep 7 Ash was applied to refine the hair and give an all over color. The toner took my bleached locks down a shade, since the hair post-bleach looked very severe. The toner was painted onto my entire head and left on for approximately 15 minutes.

Step 4. After washing off the toner, Olaplex treatment was applied to the hair. Olaplex is a bonding agent that fills the hair  to prevent  breakage and repairing it after color. It reconnects broken disulfide sulfur bonds in the hair. The treatment is labelled a “bond multiplier,” which limits damage to hair during or after coloring.  A concentrate of it was already present in the color treatment, but then Priscila applied a cream formula after the toner in order to moisturize the hair.

Step 5. Cut touch-up and style. Additional layers were cut. Hair was blown out and a curling iron was used to add texture and curl back into the hair. We used the Aveda Thickening tonic ($28) for volume and texture, and the Aveda Air Contorl Hair Spray ($28) for hold.
