Although Miss Kelly Osbourne decided to go gray via hair coloring, there are plenty of beauties out there that are letting their own natural hair sparkle and shine…

There’s something to be said about seeing natural gray-silver, uncolored hair. For the second time in my life, I actually stopped a woman to let her know how very gorgeous I thought her hair was.

At first, she didn’t realize what I was saying, but I continued to tell her how much I loved seeing her natural hair. Her name, as I later found out via email, is Yamuna Zake and she teaches body rolling (www.yamunabodyrolling.com)!

The first time I stopped someone she turned out to be Linda Rodin, and that is how we began our friendship. I could not stop admiring her look; she later told me that I must need glasses, as I was crazy to think she was one of the most beautiful people I had ever laid eyes on. Truth be told, she is stunning. Then came my favorite nail guru, Essie Weingarten; Cindy Joseph of BOOM! Cosmetics — and it started to make me think about how much I love the look of silver/gray hair. Natural hair. Uncolored.

I pay hundreds of dollars to color my hair, as it’s always been told to me that my gray hair ( that I have had since age sixteen) aged me, and that I needed to color it. I have been nearly every hue in the book and am ready to take the plunge, letting my own natural color grow out.

I know I have a lovely white streak near the back of my head, as it’s been there since I was a young girl, so I will have to endure months upon months (possibly a year) to let my natural color take over my head. I may not be able to handle it at times, yet I hope I have the strength to just go with it. I imagine I am salt and pepper now, but I truly have no clue as to what my “natural” color is anymore.

Wish me luck on my journey, and please know that this is a personal change for me that I am scared to do, yet, looking forward to as well.

I’ve just started to notice a couple of gray hairs popping up. My hair is naturally very dark brown (almost black), so they stand out. I haven’t decided what I’ll do about it yet… I’m only 27 and I don’t want too many grays too early!

It’s all up to you Marilyn! I used mascara back in the 90’s when my hair was very dark and then moved on to various hair coloring techniques throughout the years. There are other articles on our site regarding how to touch up your roots and such that may be of help to you- should you decide to color the strands. Thank you for your feedback! Nicole

Bravo, Nicole! I watched my mother dye her hair for 20+ years and decided coloring wasn’t for me. I had hair below my shoulder blades, and as the white crown hairs increased, took to putting it up in a high pony tail for about 7 years. It was different – a white streak against almost-black hair. But about 7 years ago, I cut most of it off – to the shoulders, it looked like a small animal exploded! – and began to truly embrace my white hair. It’s now about 40% bright shiny white at the crown, and chin length. I get stares, compliments from men, women, even children! But it’s not about that: it’s about feeling comfortable with the real me, and my hair is part of that. I would not be ME if I dyed my hair. Since I started working in this building, two women have let their gray grow out. They don’t look better or worse, but they do look confident in their choices. If I thought the white didn’t look good, I might have to think about coloring it. I do spend $$ for a great haircut regularly, have a super hair tech, and get my bangs trimmed. I get a pedicure, take care of my skin, wear makeup, give myself manicures. We all do what works for us. Choices. Welcome to the few, Nicole!

I just turned 60. I have alwys been natural about wearing my own dark brown hair color. About 10 years ago I noticed gray. Hair around my face and started having highlights put in. Then in 2007 the economy went bad and Idecided to forego highlighting my hair to save money. Now I am glad I no longer color my hair, besides being more economical my hair is shiny and healthy looking compared tommy friends who all color their hair. Besides who am I fooling, I am no longer spring chicken.
