The Veronica Beard girl for Fall/Winter 2014 is chic and elegant, yet ready for a big night out. O&M’s Creative Director Janelle Chaplin created a cool, easy look by offsetting the loose, classic ’70s wave with a super-tight, sleek side to complete the designers’ vision.

How-To Steps:

1. Prep dry hair with a generous amount of O&M Rootalicious Root Lift Spray throughout roots to ends.

2. Blow-dry with a round brush to achieve a soft look.

3. With a wide tooth comb, part hair on the right at the arch of the eyebrow, creating a dramatic
sweep to the left.

4. Create soft waves by lightly curling the hair with a large curling iron, brushing through to smooth.

5. Then, apply O&M Style Guru Styling Cream to the right side of the hair, slicking back behind the ear.  Finish with a light dusting of O&M Surf Bomb Sea Salt Spray to add texture to the waves.

Gilded Age

Jenny Balding, NYC Cutler Salon Stylist & Redken Grooming & Styling Expert, styled the hair at the Gilded Age FW14 Collection.

“The look for Gilded Age had a poetic feel – keeping looking tailored but with a natural disheveled finish. This complimented the clothes beautifully as the collection is one of a poetic, tailored feel. This look works best when there is longer layers through the front area especially.” – Jenny Balding, NYC Cutler/Redken Stylist

1. Start by creating a natural side part.

2. On damp hair, use a blow dryer and use your fingers  to maneuver the hair over to one side casually. Redken For Men Dishevel is perfect for most hair types to create the finish for this look.

3. Use small amounts and starting at the crown work your way forward to the front to create this slight disheveled, poetic look.

Peter Som

For Fall 2014, Peter Som describes the collection as “tailored silhouettes with a sixties Parisian vibe that gives way to feminine Moroccan-inspired flou.”

Peter describes the beauty and hair look as very natural, noting, “like it’s a part of the model.”  Parisian chic, with fresh desirability highlighted by hints of monochromatic accent colors create a multidimensional sophistication.

Wella Professionals Top Artist, Alex Matiz of NYC’s Muze Salon, chose a hair color palette inspired by a 2014 Wella trend that symbolizes a harmonious coexistence of nature and technology through a palette of cool, washed tones. This trend is about color that has a very soft and highly understandable personality – reconnecting to a more grounded well-being. She then colored the extensions using shades from Wella Professionals Illumina Color’s NEW Naturals Collection to achieve cool golden tones with hints of lilac. Illumina Color allowed Alex the benefits of a permanent color that delivers translucent, luminous results while protecting hair health.

Get the Look:

1. Wash and condition hair using Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo, Conditioner, and Treatment to preserve the brilliant shade and shine of color-treated hair.

2. Blow-dry hair using a round brush creating natural volume and a gentle curl at the tips.

3. Spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray on to the surface of the hair — this helps to create matte texture and showcase a disarranged shape.

4. Create a semi-part in side of hair and insert extension pieces throughout for desired amount of color.

5. Blow-dry lightly focusing on the roots for extra lift, then brush through and shake hair out naturally.

6. Use fingertips to massage roots, this creates a light, imperfect roughness almost as if it had been lightly teased.

7. To create more volume and texture, lift random sections of the hair, and spray with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray.

Marissa Webb

Marissa Webb’s Autumn/Winter 2014 Collection was influenced by the lifestyle of a fast-paced “industry girl.” The collection is refined and tailored with an urban edge, including pieces that are a bit over-sized, yet feminine, for an effortlessly cool look that is never too perfect. To bring the designer’s vision to life, TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu created two hairstyles that were polished yet undone, with natural matte texture and a whimsical, airy finish.

Dual Texture:

1. Apply TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse on damp hair, and rough-dry by flipping hair over and gently pulling at the roots for lift.

2. Once dry, use a flat brush to lightly comb the hair.

3. Starting at the nape, take large horizontal sections and mist with TRESemmé Thermal Creations Curl Activator Spray. Wrap hair loosely around the barrel of 1¼-inch and 1-inch curling irons, leaving ends out. Alternate between irons to create an irregular wave and work your way to the top of the head.

4. Create a messy center part, and flat-iron from the part to eye level.

5. Mattify hair with TRESemmé Fresh Start Renewal Dry Shampoo, then brush out to get a natural airy texture.

6. Spray the top with NEW TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Illuminating Shine Spray for a dual texture that is both matte and shiny.

Messy Top-Knot:

1. Apply a liberal amount of TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse to hair and rough-dry with fingers, lifting at the roots.

2. Once dry, lightly brush hair and spray with NEW TRESemmé Fresh Start Renewing Dry Shampoo to mattify.

3. Back-brush the hairline for an airy perimeter of wisps. Then, use your hands to loosely pull hair up into a high ponytail and fasten with an elastic.

4. Back-brush ponytail and twist loosely into a bun, leaving ends out. Fasten with large hair pins.
Finish with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray.

Lela always loves hair away from the face to showcase the clothes, but she doesn’t like the hair to be too tight. So my challenge every season is to come up with something new and fresh within these guidelines that will inspire her and compliment her clothing. This twisted bun is classic, yet totally modern and romantic, and compliments the looks in her collection perfectly.”

Erin Fetherston

Erin Fetherston’s A/W 2014 Collection (and her own lovely locks!) had extra shine thanks to Clairol Natural Instincts — which was used as a gloss treatment to prep models. Natural Instincts, a gloss treatment, is a DIY must-have on and off the runway. As the healthier hair color, it helps give dull, lackluster hair super high shine.

Clairol Color Director James Corbett recommends:

1. Select a shade closest to your current shade, which keeps your current color but gives it a beautiful boost of shine and enhancement.

2. This can be done in between salon visits for highlights or all-over color… or for women who don’t typically color their hair.

3.  And for the truly color-shy, a clear gloss is available

James Pecis for Beauty.com used PHYTO & T3 Tools to create this “slightly punk rock look reminiscent of an employee at Dover Street Market with a hair allowance” at the Rachel Comey AW14 show.

Get The Look:

 1. If the hair is wet, begin by using the T3Featherweight Luxe 2i to dry the hair. To create natural waves, use the T3 SinglePass Twirl Curling Iron.

2. Separate the hair into sections and back-comb from root to tip to create texture.
3. Rough-dry the PHYTO Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray into the hair for volume.

4. Create a deep side part and back-comb pieces working from tip to root. Mist with PHYTO Professional Workable Holding Spray to help keep hair in place and tucked behind the ears.

5. Clip hair back and away from the face. Using an elastic thread, sew hair in place with two stitches from the nape of the neck to the back of the hair. This will secure the hair into place while also giving it room to move.

6. Finish the look by pulling out a couple of pieces of the hair from one side of the head for an asymmetrical, textured look. Finish with PHYTO Phytolaque Soie.

7. Spray hands with PHYTO Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray and gently pat down the deep side part to keep the hair in place.

Rag & Bone

Paul Hanlon for OSiS+ created this urban sports knot at the Rag & Bone AW14 show. “A masculine edge — more of a street style — not meant to look glamourous.”

Get the Look:

1. Begin by generously covering hair with OSiS+ Grip extreme hold mousse and then rough-dry to give hair a powdery texture. Next, apply OSiS+ Rough Rubber rubber paste and work through roots to make them dirty, creating separation and strong defintion.

2. Apply OSiS+ Dust It mattifying powder to the entire head. Then, twist large sections and back-comb with fingers to mimic a dreadlock look. Spray a thin layer of OSiS+ Elastic flexible hold hairspray to keep frayed ends in place. Gather hair at the nape of the neck and tie strands in a knot, leaving some pieces out.

3. Work OSiS+ Mess Up matt gum to hair around the face to add shine and contrast. Blow loose locks back to give the style shape and lock the look with OSiS+ Freeze strong hold hairspray.

Alexander Wang
nyfw fallwinter 2014 2015 hair color style trends dual matte texture sleek side parts side swept bangs cool golden lilac highlights tones twisted bun messy top knot
Redken Creative Consultant, Guido used control addict 28 extra high-hold hairspray to create a firm, almost helmet-like shape around the head at the Alexander Wang AW14 show. To further amplify the artificial quality of the look, Guido coated the hair with shine flash 02 glistening mist and had the makeup team color in the model’s part.

The head shape, rather than the ponytail, was the prominent style at Alexander Wang‘s show. While there were unconventional elements at play, the overall style remained super cool and chic.

“The inspiration for the hair this season actually came from a drawing Alexander Wang shared with me when he was designing the collection. I wanted the hair to look drawn on the models like Alex‘s illustration, so I used very straight lines to create the illusion that the hair was stuck on. I didn’t want the hair to be too normal. I wanted to make something classic, a little different so certain elements were slightly off. “
