nyfw springsummer 2014 hairstyle trends loose waves side parts big ponytails tangled braids best looksThe Spring/Summer 2014 season can’t come soon enough! Healthy, shiny and wavy hair with a side part made us think of Italian actresses from the ’40s at Narciso Rodriguez.

Tousled and unkept beachy waves gave a new meaning to the term “bedhead” at Prabal Gurung and FALLON. Read on to learn how to get these NYFW hair looks at home with step-by-step tips from the hair stylists and experts themselves.

 Moroccanoil – Narcisco Rodriguez

Who: Paul Hanlon for Moroccanoil created the hair look for the Narciso Rodriguez SS14 show.

Look: The styles were inspired by the confident, naturally beautiful woman of today with a subtle nuance of 1940’s award-winning Italian film actress Monica Vitti, including a sexy and sophisticated side part with a soft, loose wave in front.

“The quality of the hair is all important in this look,” said Hanlon. “Lots of shine, richness and a beautiful, healthy, vital quality to the hair.

Moroccanoil products worked well to create these looks because of their remarkable conditioning properties. They’re very light so you can build them up. It’s all about well-conditioned, quality, super-luxurious, shiny hair.”

Steps:

1. “I started by applying Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection from mid-length to ends to ensure good hair condition during the blow-dry.

2. Next, I applied a generous amount of Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse (for added body with medium hold), then brushed it through the hair.

3. I took oversize sections using a large Moroccanoil Ionic Ceramic Round Brush and blow-dried. This was almost like a salon blow-dry, but I wanted to achieve only a bit of volume with substantial shine while rolling in the ends. The oversize sections created movement without using irons or tools.

4. When I finished, I sprayed a bit of Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray on the side part to make sure all baby hairs were lying flat. I clipped down the sides to take a bit of volume out and sprayed the top area again for hold with a nice shine.

5. To complete, I applied 1 – 2 drops of Moroccanoil Treatment Light from mid-length to ends (rubbing in my palm and between fingers and combing through the entire look). We didn’t want the hair to look too done or static but to have an ease and sexiness to it, as if the fingers were just run through the hair.”

Moroccanoil – DELPOZO

Who: Moroccanoil Artistic Director Antonio Corral Calero created masterful looks that boldly experimented with concepts of volume, refined rounded shapes and sleek, smooth texture for the DELPOZO SS14 show.

Look: Inspired by the portrait “Gypsy woman with tambourine” by Corot, Josep Font takes nature as a reference to create the next DELPOZO project. Just as in the painting, all the details of the collection come together in an embracing and relaxed manner.

The volumized styles were parted strongly in the middle, flat on top, with circles of volume flowing back from the jawline to mid-head. The strong shapes were supported and lifted by double ponytails piggy-backed underneath, with fine strands flowing freely down sides and back.

“Our goal was ultimate simplicity – to create a wearable look that could be styled in only five minutes. No blow-dryers were needed, and we used one key product on dry hair, Moroccanoil Treatment, which served to condition, style and smooth the hair at the same time.”

Steps:

1.Moroccanoil Treatment was used as a foundation and applied to dry hair from mid-length to ends. I made a strong middle part and flat-ironed the hair from roots to ends so the hair was completely straight and flat.

2. Next, I lifted most of the hair, leaving about 2” on the nape of the neck and made a small ponytail. An elastic was placed at the root to offer support for the lift to come.

I then brought all the hair back down. Starting at the back of the crown, I backcombed hair from middle to ends until 4” above the ponytail.

The teasing, especially mid-back, created a kind of “nest” above the ponytail. I gently combed over the surface of the hair, smoothing the rounded shapes.  I did an occasional touch-up with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium (on my comb) when I saw any flyaways on the center part.

5. To complete the look, I brought the rest of the hair back and made a second ponytail above the first. I then strengthened the generous rounded shapes by pushing the second ponytail upwards to create more volume and support, and secured them with bobby pins.”

Moroccanoil – KAUFMANFRANCO

Who: Antonio Corral Calero, Moroccanoil Artistic Director, created the hair look for the KAUFMANFRANCO SS14 show.

Look: “My inspiration was a sophisticated urban girl on the go – free-spirited, secure and confident,” said runway stylist Antonio Corral Calero.

“Contrasting structure, shape, and texture were key elements to the look. The hair was rounded and smooth on top, close to the sides, and loosely disheveled in the back above a free-flowing, deconstructed ponytail that moved when models walked.

Black headbands framed the face to counterpoint the clothes, and the hair itself looked rich and vital, with a luminous, healthy-looking shine.”

Steps:

1. “I mixed a cocktail of Moroccanoil Treatment with Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream and applied on wet hair (from mid-length to ends) to give the hair a healthy smoothness and shine, as well as soft hold.

2. Starting at the nape, I blow-dried the hair using a Moroccanoil Ionic Ceramic Round Brush, creating fullness and lift at the roots. I directed the hair at the top and sides away from the face, and added extra bend to the ends.

3. Next, I sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium on the brush and smoothed down the sides of the hair.

4. Finally, I brushed and gathered the entire length of the hair at the nape of the neck, gripped the pony with my left hand and pushed the rest of the hair upwards to create volume and a rounded shape.

At the same time, I used my right hand to lift and release small flyaways and loosen the hair above the pony, while the hair on top remained rounded and smooth.

5. After tying the ponytail, and wrapping a few strands around its base, I put on stretchy black headbands created by the designers at the hairline (freeing the earlobes).

6. Finally, a light mist of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray added rich, sexy-looking shine to complete the look.”

Who: John Barrett for Alterna Haircare created the hair look for the SS14 Holmes & Yang show.

Look: Tousled texture with loose, face-framing strands evoked an adventurous nature.

4. When done curling the entire head, shake up the curls with your fingers. The messier the better. Scrunch with Alterna Haircare Bamboo Style Boho Waves Spray.

5. Push hair to deep side part then start French-braiding hair from nape of neck twisting and adding sections to the braid till you reach the opposite ear; secure with a clear elastic. Twist and tuck the braid underneath by pinning into place with bobby pins.

6. For a piecier look, pull out a few strands near the face and finish with the Alterna Haircare Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Oil Micromist for a boost of shine.

ICB/ Prabal Gurung

Who: L’Oréal Professionnel Artist Anthony Turner created the hair look for the Prabal Gurung SS14 show.

Look: Prabal Gurung was inspired by holographic patterns which he translated into street-chic pieces with emulsion print swirls with pops of color in exaggerated silhouettes. “For the hair look, I was inspired by a ‘90s raver girl,” said Gurung. “And Anthony really brought that to life.”

Steps:

1. To create the look, center part the hair and dampen with water. Then, depending on the model’s hair type, Turner used either L’Oréal Professionnel Expansion Mousse for fine hair or L’Oréal Professionnel Lift Extrême Mousse for medium/thick hair to achieve weightless volume and body.

2. Afterwards, L’Oréal Professionnel Volumetry Root Spray was applied directly to the roots for added lift and density.

3. Strands were then blow-dried with fingers and ends lightly scrunched for texture. To give the style its spirited, young and light quality, L’Oréal Professionnel Fresh Dust Dry Shampoo was sprayed all throughout, and strands were tucked behind ears.

4. Finally, L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium 3 Hairspray set the look, while maintaining the softness in texture.

Moroccanoil – Rachel Zoe

nyfw springsummer 2014 hairstyle trends loose waves side parts big ponytails tangled braids best looks

Who: Antonio Corral CaleroMoroccanoil Artistic Director, created the hair look for the Rachel Zoe SS14 show.

Look: Corral Calero created a deconstructed modern take on the braid with a contrasting and overlapping tangled, textural effect that looked as if hair was styled on-the-go and blown free, loose and waved by the elements.

The look was achieved by taking random parts of pre-textured strands, crisscrossing them (like macramé) and tucking them into the back and inside of a low braid.

Steps:

“I started with a foundation of Moroccanoil Treatment on dry hair to condition, strengthen and smooth, then sprayed new Moroccanoil Root Boost (at the roots starting at the nape and working up). Also, applying Moroccanoil Treatment on dry hair gave me more traction and grip for the other products that followed.

2. New Moroccanoil Molding Cream was next. Warming a bit between my fingers, I worked it in from roots to ends. This was a key product for the look, giving it the right semi-matte texture with enough shine. It was important for the hair to look healthy, not too dry.

3. I then blow-dried the hair from underneath and lifted hair at the roots using my fingers, letting it dance and tangle under the air flow. It was important not to pull or try to control the hair.

nyfw springsummer 2014 hairstyle trends loose waves side parts big ponytails tangled braids best looks

4. When almost dry, and with model’s head bent over, I finger-massaged the hair at the root and lifted it again to intensify the tangled texture.

5. I then sectioned the hair from ear to ear and pinned it up while I created a braid with remaining strands at the nape of the neck.

6. I released the top hair and then tucked different parts of the various strands into the braid like macramé and blended them in waves, creating a loose, inverse-pyramid shape that was wider on top.

7. Then, I softly rotated my palm over the hair to make it lie naturally – creating more flyaways at the top.

8. To add a tribal vibe, I made several little braids placed randomly at the sides.

9. Finally, I took little baby hairs around the hairline and pulled them out – so they would also move as models walked the runway.”
