BeautyStat: What inspires you? How did you first decide you wanted to embrace the world of hair?

Ken Paves: “I realized that making a woman feel great about herself also made me feel great about myself. I feel that the end result, the look, is not my value but our true value to one another is caring for, encouraging, and loving each other.”

BeautyStat: How has your partnership been with Jessica Simpson?

KP “It’s been wonderful – we’re best of friends so everything comes together naturally, and effortlessly! We collaborated on each and every style that is in the hairdo collection. All the styles are based on our favorite looks we have created over the years, and also what we have been told that women like most. I designed hairdo to be incredibly modern. That meant there would be a casual elegance to hair, while adding volume and texture. ‘Sexy’ hair is always in, but today’s sexy hair is beautiful and natural, each hairdo piece was designed with this in mind. Some pieces are made of 100% human hair, and others are made of Tru2Life (which can be heat-style up to 350 degrees.) They are designed to be used over and over again and are available in both straight and wavy styles.”

BeautyStat: How is Operation Smile? How have you been involved in this?

Ken Paves: “Operation Smile has long been one of the major philanthropic forces that have impacted my life and the lives of so many others. Operation Smile’s medical volunteer teams have spent tireless weeks (more recently) in Haiti performing life-saving surgeries on people who have nowhere else to turn. We often take for granted the resources that we have in this country. I thank God that Operation Smile’s teams are still in Haiti as we speak, helping people regain their lives by mending their bodies. I’ve been involved with Operation Smile for over 7 years. It is an organization close to my heart as my nephew Ryan was born with a cleft and died as an infant.

My niece Caitlyn and I went on an Operation Smile mission to Honduras where we saw firsthand kids’ lives change as they were given new smiles – it was a moving experience for us.”

BeautyStat: Women all over the world tend to be very critical of their hair. What advice would you give them?

Ken Paves: “Use self-expression. The way we present ourselves tells the world a lot about us. Don’t tell the world you want to look like everyone else. Define a sense of beauty true to yourself, and change your hair as often as you change your mind! It should be fun.”

BeautyStat: Do you have hair envy? If so, whose hair?!

Ken Paves: “Yes! Adrian Grenier or Bradley Cooper! When it’s long and curly!! Wait, isn’t my hair like that???”

Readers who submit a question for Ken will automatically be entered to win one of the five complete sets of the Self Help Care Line. Hello My question is for the chemically straightened hair Which is better Brazillian or Japanese? Which one leaves less damage, stays longer, and works better?

    Thank you !

Hello!! My hair is super healthy… except right around my face where I HAVE HAVE HAVE to straight iron it every day unless I wear a hatheadband. Otherwise, devil’s ears come to play. Any tips on how to get the straightness around my face without massacreing it???

What are your recommended steps for shampooing? Brush hair first? Two sudsings? Leave-in or rinse-out conditioner? Cold water rinse? Air dry?

Also what do you think of pre-shampoo conditioners and overnight conditioners if my hair is already healthy, but colored? Thanks!!
