THE NEWS: Garnier Fructis Anti-Dandruff Intense Cleanse Shampoo claims to control dandruff for 48 hours after just one wash and leave hair completely flake-free with continued use. Click on the images to enlarge.

HOW IT WORKS: The main ingredient, pyrithione zinc, is a common one in dandruff shampoos: It slows the growth of a fungus on the scalp believed to cause dandruff. Polyethylene beads, as well as the chemical exfloliant salicylic acid, help lift dead skin from the scalp so it can be rinsed away. Vitamin B, which has niacinamide, fills in cracks in the cuticle, making it look healthier.

THE VERDICT: “Salicylic acid allows pyrithione zinc to reduce flakes more effectively, which may explain why the company’s test show it keeps hair flake-free for 48 hours – a claim I haven’t see before,” says cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson. “I’m not aware of another dandruff shampoo that includes niacinamide to strengthen hair, which can benefit every hair type.” We found the lather creamy and the scent clean.
