Ora Assayag has worked as a nutritionist, but in her suburban New Jersey neighborhood she’s known as an environmentally conscious, all-natural-minded mom. Friends know that she keeps her kids away from snacks with artificial coloring, and, on a larger scale, that she is passionate about home-grown health alternatives.

“When my daughter had eczema, the doctor recommended steroids and antibiotics and I thought, ‘We haven’t tried anything else yet.’  That’s when I made my Touchy Skin Salve specifically formulated for soothing skin,” says Assayag.

From that first endeavor in her own kitchen, her skincare line Ora’s Amazing Herbal was born. Working out of that same kitchen with the help of her husband Ronen, “a methodical engineer,” to whom she attributes the product’s “consistency,” Assayag produces her All Purpose Salves ($11.99 1oz; $24.99 4 oz) as well as the Touchy Skin Salve ($11.99 1oz; $24.99 4 oz) — geared towards those in need of extra epidermal TLC.

Both salves are comprised of a healing, herb-infused base oil that are gluten- and dairy-free, as well as kosher. They are also devoid of all synthetic ingredients including fragrances.

Assayag says she has received feedback from those who’ve used the Touchy Skin Salve and gotten relief from a wide range of dermatological predicaments including sunburn, allergic skin conditions… even tattoo healing!

Using a herbal blend of ingredients that include grape seed oil, licorice root and more emollient components that give her salves staying power –  i.e. beeswax, castor oil and coconut oil – the herbal, paraben-free line is now available online, www.orasamazingherbal.com, and in select health food stores (also listed on the website).

Assayag says that before developing the line, which also includes aromatic Natural Lip Balms ($4.99), she did not want to sweeten the formula so kids would lick the balms off; she conducted extensive research “to offer a wide-spectrum blend addressing different issues.”

Licorice root helps inflammation; calendula wax aids tissue healing and plantain works for bites and stings. There are other ingredients for just about anything, like thyme, a kitchen ingredient that is a good antimicrobial herb for eczema.”

She adds that thyme is also an anti-aging ingredient, as is another ingredient called burdock which she blends into the mix.

Review of Ora’s Amazing Herbal

After personally reviewing the components that go into Ora’s Amazing Herbal products, I  decided to have a go at the goods myself. If ancient medicinal herbalists have been using these ingredients for thousands of years, and Assayag has – in her words – “drawn on their wisdom,”  I felt I was in good hands. More specifically, my hands were in good hands.

A patch of skin on my palm that has been consistently dry for the past three years was suddenly soft following a week’s worth of application (the Touchy Skin Salve). I also had success using the smallest amount of All Purpose Salve on flyaways due to my newly blown out hair.

I would highly recommend this skin salve as a hair pomade, because it perfected my blow-out — kept it sleek for the next few days and prevented the usual curling/frizz from humidity.

But back to skin: Essential oils are in the salves, including cedar leaf and rosemary, which has microbial properties that help soothe and moisturize one’s feet. I found it to be tremendously helpful for my own weathered, over-aerobicized hooves. From my own testing, I would highly recommend the All Purpose Salve as the last step to a perfect pedicure.

Ora Assayag

Not only is it good for your tootsies, but it has all mild ingredients that will not cause you any skin irritations.

Last, but not least, the lips: Assayag’s Lip Balms (available in 8 flavors) are comprised of the same base oil as her salves. As she explained, they have aromatherapy value from their essential oils.

For instance, the Basil Rosemary Lip Balm is an energy booster as well as an immune booster. Assayag says that if she feels exhausted, she puts it on and it revives her. This is a trick that I am determined to try in order to wean myself off extra bold coffee – so tomorrow morning, I too will be using this balm.

She also finds the Earl Grey Lip Balm to be very soothing. Perhaps one day it will replace Xanax and Ativan in pocketbooks across the nation… I hope so.

Ora’s Amazing Herbal products are not only all-natural, but I found that they truly are effective in so many ways — and they can be used for multiple purposes. The Touchy Skin Salve soothed my 6-year-old’s  sunburnt shoulders and kept my 3-year-old from scratching the eczema at the back of his legs. It also worked on a new ear piercing of mine that had been causing me some pain.

I’m sure being that I, like Ora Assayag, have four children of my own, I will discover more purposes for these products. This low-end line of high-end natural care products (as compared to skincare items sold at Whole Foods) won’t break the bank. More importantly, the fact that the salves are so concentrated means that I will be using mine for months.

I have used Ora’s All-Purpose Salve for several months now and would NEVER be without it! It is perfect for a variety of dry skin problems living here in Phoenix and has an excellent aroma and texture. The fact that she uses all natural ingredients, makes the product in small batches and has great quality control all seals the deal. Anytime I’m experiencing any skin irritation, I literally call out: “Let’s get some Ora!!” Thanks for making such a wonderful product!
