At Clairol’s Expert Technique Workshop the Color Experts themselves, Marie Robinson, Clairol Color Director, and Marcy Cona, Clairol Global Creative Director of Color and Style, developed and demonstrated the latest trend-inspired hair color techniques.

Try the Reverse Ombre for an updated look on a fashion-forward classic; work a two-toned hair color with the Color Tapestry technique that makes light blondes and brunettes dazzle with royal highlights, while the Color Duo and 3D Color tonal shades will have everyone turning heads. Read on to find out which products from Clairol to use and how to get these hair color styles at home.

Reverse Ombre by Marie Robinson

Reverse ombre is a new twist on the ombre trend, creating results that melt from a lighter color on the mid length to a darker, richer color on the ends.

Products/Shade Selection:

Current Shade: blonde to medium brown

– Use 2 shades in the same tone family for desired color; choose a shade 1-2 shades darker than your current color for our first shade

– Choose a shade 3-4 shades darker than your current color for your tips to add drama

Prep:

1. Read instructions, put on gloves provided in the box before using any color, perform Allergy Test 48 hours prior/Strand Test to predict results.

2. Prepare your hair color essentials

3. Divide hair into 4 large, equal sections. Secure each section with a plastic clip.

Application:

1. Prep your lighter shade of Nice ‘n Easy; starts application several inches away from scalp to mid length to all 4 sections.

2. When mid-lengths are fully saturated, prep your darker shade and apply from ends of hair to middle where your first color ends.

Finish:

1. Process for 25-minutes. Rinse, condition and style.

Color Tapestry Technique by Marcy Cona

Ideal for naturally wavy or curly hair, this technique integrates shades of color to create interwoven texture using Natural Instincts.

Products/Shade Selection:

Current Shade: dark blonde, light brown to medium brown, medium brown to dark brown

– Choose one Natural Instincts shade for tone, second Natural Instincts shade for depth

Tone Shade: up to 3 shades lighter than your starting color

Depth Shade: current color or 1 shade darker

Prep:

1. Read instructions, put on gloves provided in the box before using any color, perform Allergy Test 48 hours prior/Strand Test to predict results.

2. Prepare your hair color essentials

3. Shampoo and towel-dry

Curly Texture: Separate into four equal sections; secure each with a plastic clip.

Smooth Texture: Create deep side part and separate into four equal sections, ear to ear; use plastic clips if necessary.

Application

1. Apply lighter shade from roots to tip in all four sections.

2. Braid each section. Using the makeup sponge, apply depth shade on the surface/along the weave of the braid, leaving the ends out.

3. Process 10-minutes.

Finish

1. Rinse with warm water.

Product/Shade Selection:

Current Shade: light brown to dark brown, medium blonde to dark blonde

– Choose one shade of Nice ‘n Easy for the base; one shade for mid-shaft and ends

Shade 1: Choose a shade 1-2 levels lighter than Shade 2 within the same tonal family for mid shaft and ends

Shade 2: Choose a shade for your roots/base/hairline that will contrast and provide a backdrop for your lighter shade choice

Prep

1. Read instructions, put on gloves provided in the box before using any color, perform Allergy Test 48 hours prior/Strand Test to predict results.

2. Prepare hair color essentials.

3. Part dry hair in the center and separate into four equal sections. Secure each section with a plastic clip.

Application

1. Mix Shade 1 and apply to the mid shaft of your hair. Process for 10-15 minutes.

2. Mix Shade 2 and apply to roots/hairline and process for 15-minutes.

Finish

1. Rinse hair with warm water until water runs clear.

2. Use your inbox Color Seal Gloss to condition your hair, leave on for 2-5 minutes, rinse and style.

3D Color by Marie Robinson

Perfect for creating dimension, this technique adds highlights and/or lowlights to your hair.

Product/Shade Selection:

Current Shade: blonde to medium brown

Root Touch-Up by Nice ‘n Easy; Hairpainting Kit by Nice ‘n Easy for optional brightness around face

– To add depth or lowlights to your hair, choose a shade 1-2 levels darker than your existing color

– To add natural highlight or color, choose a shade 2-3 shades lighter or add a tone

Prep

1. Read instructions, put on gloves provided in the box before using any color, perform Allergy Test 48 hours prior/Strand Test to predict results.

2. Prepare your hair color essentials.

3. Divide hair into 4 sections. Gather top section on either side of your head, like a half-up ‘do; separate into two sections, securing with plastic clips. Separate remaining hair into two sections and secure with plastic clips.

Application

1. Prep Root Touch-Up in desired shade.

2. Start with 2 back sections using Root Touch-Up brush to paint 8 random pieces (2-inches apart) in sections where you want depth or highlights. Take down your side section and proceed 2-inches above the ear and work your way up to natural part, highlighting 6-8 pieces, and repeat on other side.

3. Upon completion, if you’d like, add a few face framing highlights with the Hairpainting Kit for an added pop of color.

Finish

1. Process for 10-minutes

2. Shampoo, rinse and style

    I will be taking a look at these hair colouring products. After many years of having my hair professionally done … my budget now suggests that I return to home colouring … with these options it looks like it will be fun! ox
